Job Summary:The Secretary for the Board of Trustees is an officer of the Board of Trustees and reports directly to the Board through the Chairperson of the Board. Responsible for the overall supervision of the Board Office and operations. Provides counsel and advice on Board issues to the President and other members of the executive administration and serves as the liaison between the Board and the university administration on policy and procedural matters, governance, and communications pertaining to the Board. This position is responsible for proper governance and the administration of matters related to the Board of Trustees in accordance with the laws of Ohio and the bylaws of the Board of Trustees.Essential Functions:Responsible for the overall supervision of the Board office and its operations; administration of matters related to the Board of Trustees including maintaining the official record of actions considered and taken by the Board of Trustees and its committees; and planning, coordinating, and facilitating the work of the Board of Trustees and its committees to help enable it to effectively govern The University of Akron.Plan, direct and manage the process for the creation of the agendas for executive sessions, committee meetings and other materials in connection with meetings of the Board of Trustees. Collaborates with the Trustees, President, Provost, and Vice Presidents in setting agendas for meetings. Arrange and attend all Board of Trustees and related committee meetings. Prepare, record, and maintain minutes of all meetings of the Board and committees of the Board as required by law.Serve as a liaison between members of the Board of Trustees, Office of the President, University Administration and external constituencies and contacts. Receive and respond to correspondence and requests involving the Board. Manage and coordinate institutional policy-making processes with the Board of Trustees, President, and University Administration. Assist with the transition of Board chairs and incoming/outcoming board members. Provide orientation of new Board members and organize, arrange, and plan Board retreats, workshops, and special meetings and their related agendas.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Provost, Vice Presidents, other members of administration and their respective staff in order to facilitate positive interaction and flow of information. Determine informational needs of the Board and establish processes for managing this effort. Facilitate responses to Board members' requests and ensure the timely delivery of information to Trustees. Coordinate with General Counsel on all matters of legal compliance. Coordinates and implements special projects. Perform related duties as assigned.Additional Position Information:Required Education: A relevant Bachelor's degree.Required Experience: Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible administrative experience handling high-level administration responsibilities with at least four years of experience in higher education. Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal, communication skills. Demonstrates a high level of discretion and judgment in handling sensitive information, with the ability to determine and maintain confidentiality. Strong presentation and organizational skills. Strong computer software and technology skills. Ability to adhere to applicable governance requirements, manage board protocol and etiquette. Project management skills. Public relation skills. Ability to provide leadership to a diverse campus and external community.
