GENERAL PURPOSE: The Security Officer position is responsible for providing for the safety and security of Heidelberg University students, faculty, staff, guests and the preservation of property through enforcement of University policies and procedures. The Security Officerwill accomplish this purpose through conspicuous patrol, responding to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and providing other safety-related services. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Security and Compliance and the CHRCO. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May assist the Director of Campus Security and Compliance with day-to-day guidance and supervision over the student Security Officers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains the daily activity log book and records all shift activity in daily activity log book. Assists with training new student personnel as assigned by the Director of Campus Security and Compliance. Completes fire drills in all campus buildings as assigned by the Director of Campus Security and Compliance. Fuels and maintains security vehicles; performs proper safety inspections and reports any malfunctions or repairs needed. Enforces all Heidelberg University policies and regulations set forth by the University. Patrols parking areas and enforces all parking regulations including ticketing and reporting accidents or crimes related to vehicles parked on campus. Unlocks and locks campus facilities as scheduled or requested by Heidelberg staff and faculty; performs routine checks on emergency exit lighting, locks and fire alarms. Responds to emergency calls for assistance including medical matters, fire alarms, and other safety / security related issues. Assists medical and emergency response units upon their arrival to campus and performs traffic and crowd control functions as needed or directed by emergency personnel. Monitors and handles fire safety equipment. Provides campus escorts. Performs routine patrols of and through University owned buildings and properties both on and off campus. Documents and appropriately reports all violations of University policy and other events by completing an incident communication form. Other duties as required or assigned in support of the University's mission and core values.RequirementsDESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: (A) Associate's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management, or related field; and, (B) One (1) to two (2) years relevant experience in safety, security, law enforcement, public safety or related field; or, (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education and Experience: (A) Bachelor's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management, or related field; (B) Three (3) or more years progressively responsible experience; and / or, (C) Prior experience overseeing the safety / security departments in an education or higher education organizational structure. Ability to maintain level of confidentiality with regards to sensitive data and records. (E) Ability to create and maintain working relationships with other faculty, staff and students. (F) Ability to exercise sound independent judgment when answering questions and direct to appropriate department if necessary. (G) Ability to understand and follow through with multi-directional tasks; Ability to maintain more than one project at a time and be comfortable meeting deadlines. (H) Knowledge of word processing and data management software and ability to learn new software and programs as necessary. (I) Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and a varied shift. (J) Certified First Responder and / or CPR / AED and First Aid or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Knowledge of operation and use of various office equipment including, but not limited to: personal computer, including spreadsheet and word processing software, adding machine, fax machine, copier, telephone, two-way radio communication devices scanner, and printers. Employee in this position must have a valid Ohio driver's license and must be able to operate a variety of vehicles. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use arms, hands and fingers to operate and manipulate equipment generally found in an office setting. The employee may be frequently required to walk, sit, stand, talk, and hear. The employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat, extreme cold, precipitation, smoke and vapors. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental demands include occasional varied degrees of occasional stress while performing job duties. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in an office setting, residential dormitories, and educational facilities including sports and entertainment venues, all of which may be indoor or outdoor. The noise level in the work environment will range from moderately quiet to occasionally loud. SELECTION GUIDELINES: The Security Officer will be selected after a formal application procedure, education and experience rating, oral interview, and reference check. Job related tests may be required. All offers of employment are contingent upon a satisfactory criminal background screen, motor vehicle record search, drug and alcohol screen, physical and / or psychological examination at the University's discretion.
