Description
Brief Overview
The Senior Accountant/Controller performs a vital role in supporting SDSP's financial leadership, through managing a wide array of accounting functions. This includes but is not limited to assisting with account reconciliations, monthly financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, and budgeting. This position also ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial data and plays a pivotal role in financial and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in accounting practices, the ability to contribute to financial planning, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Primary Responsibilities
* Prepare month-end journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, and other internal financial reports as part of the monthly closing process.
* Observe monthly physical inventory measurements.
* Reconcile monthly inventory, production, and shipments and prepare production yield reports.
* Prepare internal and external financial statements and reports.
* Establish and follow internal accounting procedures to maintain financial security and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
* Assist with the implementation and testing of SOX 404 internal control procedures.
* Perform daily cash management duties and other online banking tasks.
* Prepare and submit various weekly, monthly, and annual governmental reports and surveys.
* Approve grain and general accounts payable disbursements.
* Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.
* Prepare and review budget, revenue, expenses, payroll entries, invoices, and other accounting documents.
* Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies.
* Maintain financial databases, computer software systems, and filing systems.
* Assist external auditors and tax preparers, act as a liaison with the audit and tax teams to ensure access to staff and data as needed, devise solutions to problems noted during audit, and prepare responses to audit findings.
* Assist with preparing annual insurance renewals, certificates of coverage, and potential claim reporting.
* Collaborate with the CFO and other senior leaders on special projects and initiatives.
* Serve as a backup for other accounting staff.
* Maintain the highest standard of customer service through a positive, friendly attitude, ensuring strong business relationships with members, customers, and vendors.
* Comply with SDSP's Safe Quality Food (SQF) food safety program and policies.
* Participate in ongoing professional development.
* Perform duties outside normal responsibilities to support the team and overall organizational goals.
Basic Qualifications
* Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field, and a minimum of 2 years' experience in accounting roles.
* Possess a high level of understanding of finance, accounting, and budgeting practices.
* Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
* Employ strong ethical standards and adhere to generally accepted accounting principles, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
* Proficiency in MS Office applications, especially Excel (familiarity with Agris and SAP Concur is advantageous)
* Possess a high degree of accuracy, demonstrating organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Effectively communicate at a professional level (verbal and written).
Work Environment
* This position is primarily indoors in an office environment with the exception of monthly inventory observations, which require the ability to climb stairs, kneel, bend and squat, and be comfortable with heights.
* Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, etc., along with some evening or weekend work as needed.
