We currently have an exciting opportunity at Northern Star (Pogo) LLC for an experienced and motivated accounting professional. Work location is based at the Fairbanks Office of Northern Star Resources, Pogo Mine. This position works a schedule of Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day.The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and will be responsible for supporting key financial functions at the mine, including payroll, accounts payable, month-end closing, and budgeting. - Support the accurate processing of bi-weekly payroll for all mine employees, ensuring compliance with company policies and relevant regulations.
- Calculate employee bonuses in accordance with company policies and performance metrics, ensuring accurate payout amounts and proper accounting treatment for bonus related expenses.
- Collaborate with HR to verify accuracy of payroll records for employees.
Accounts Payable (AP):
- Support the timely processing of accounts payable transactions and supplier payments.
- Assist in the resolution of vendor discrepancies and inquiries, including payment issues, terms, and account reconciliations.
Month-End Closing:
- Support and coordinate month-end closing activities, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded in the general ledger.
- Prepare journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, and adjustments related to payroll, accounts payable, and other financial transactions.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of month-end financial reports, including balance sheet reconciliations, income statement preparation, and variance analysis.
- Review and analyze financial data to ensure completeness and accuracy of month-end financial statements.
- Assist in the preparation of month-end financial reports for senior management and stakeholders.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Lead the preparation and coordination of the mine's annual budget, collaborating with department heads to gather data and ensure alignment with operational and strategic goals.
- Develop and maintain detailed financial forecasts, including revenue, operating costs, capital expenditures, and cash flow, to support decision-making and financial planning.
- Review and analyze budget variances, providing insightful explanations for deviations from forecasted figures, and working with managers to implement corrective actions as needed.
- Prepare periodic budget updates and financial projections, ensuring that forecasts are adjusted based on changes in operational conditions or market factors.
- Support management in evaluating the financial impact of business initiatives, capital projects, and cost-saving measures.
- Assist in long-term financial planning by providing detailed financial models and forecasts that align with the mine's strategic objectives.
- Monitor cash flow forecasts to ensure adequate liquidity for operations and capital investments.
Financial Reporting and Compliance:
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with tax filings and reporting requirements, particularly related to payroll taxes, vendor payments, and other financial obligations.
- Lead external and internal audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations for accounts payable, payroll, budgeting, and forecasting.
Continuous Improvement and Support:
- Collaborate with other departments (HR, Operations, Procurement) to improve processes, streamline financial workflows, and optimize operational efficiency.
- Provide training and guidance to junior accounting staff, ensuring adherence to accounting principles and company policies.
- Stay up-to-date with accounting standards, tax regulations, and best practices in payroll, accounts payable, budgeting, and financial forecasting.
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business related degree, Accounting designation, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Current Driver's License.
Desired Experience & Competencies
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with a strong focus on payroll, accounts payable, month-end closing, budgeting, and financial forecasting. Experience in the mining industry or a similar operational environment is preferred.
- Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all geological and environmental tasks.
- Critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, Sage, QuickBooks) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of payroll processing software and tools (e.g., ADP, Pronto) preferred.
- Extensive experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
- Familiarity with business intelligence or financial planning software (e.g., Anaplan Design) is a plus.
- Advanced analytical skills for variance analysis and financial reporting.
- Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
- Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.
