Job Description:
General Statement of Duties:
The Senior Accountant serves as the team lead for the general ledger accountants and accounts payable accountants. Assist with daily oversight and providing guidance to the team. This includes, but is not limited to, prioritizing and scheduling of work, problem resolution, handling team requests and overseeing operational activities. This role assists with maintaining, updating, and reconciling the general ledger, supervising accounting transactions, and assists with financial reporting. This position will play a key role in the redesign of financial service processes and recommissioning of BANNER.
Responsibilities:
* Assist Comptroller in the preparation of year-end financial statements for the College and Foundation and responding to auditors' enquiries.
* Assist in quarterly close, interim financial statements and other mandated reports and schedules.
* With the assistance of the AFSCME accountants, responsible for the preparation and submission of monthly state mandated reports to be reviewed and approved by senior accountant
* Assist in developing and maintaining system controls to ensure data integrity.
* Act as the bank supervisor for all banking activities and ensure that all necessary transactions are processed in a timely manner.
* Responsible for preparing monthly and yearly state accounting reports.
* Act as the liaison with other departments to ensure that outstanding checks are researched and handled in a timely manner and reported promptly to the state abandoned property division, if necessary.
* Act as the liaison with Student Financial Services
* Assist in the preparation of various reconciliations and closing procedures.
* Assist in maintaining trial balances for various fund types, reconciling activity to the general ledger, tracking fixed asset additions and deletions, debt service activity and preparing entries for depreciation and amortization.
* Assist in keeping abreast of new accounting pronouncements and changing policies, if applicable.
* Assist in leading department transformation activities, supports continuous improvement efforts, identifies, leads and implements new processes and procedures to streamline and create efficient processes.
* Represent the institution on various fiscal groups.
* Co-supervise accounting staff.
* Serve as backup for college business office functions as needed within internal control parameters.
* Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's in Accounting or related field;
* 5-7 Years of progressively increasing accounting experience;
* Experience with computerized financial accounting systems;
* Supervisory experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* A thorough knowledge of and experience in accounting methodology, business procedures, financial spreadsheets, and computerized financial database management;
* Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, standards and terminology;
* Ability to interpret federal and state laws, regulations, guidelines and procedures for financial operations and accounting systems;
* Ability to understand, apply, and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc., governing assigned unit activities;
* Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data and standards, to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations;
* Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through questioning individuals;
* Ability to prepare general and financial reports;
* Ability to write concisely to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence;
* Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression;
* Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others;
* Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
Desired Qualifications:
* Experience with fund accounting;
* Public higher education sector experience;
* CPA certification/license, CGFM, or CMA certificate;
* Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) experience;
* Experience with Commonwealth of Massachusetts accounting systems;
* Experience with Ellucian/BANNER.
