EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required
  • EducationHigh School Diploma High School graduation or GED or Vocational school or
  • Experience 2 years Experience as animal technician or its equivalent in facility comparable to the Animal Resources Center. and
JOB DUTIES
  • Provide animal husbandry in quarantine, isolation, biohazard, conventional, or barrier-sustained areas.
  • Receive, identify, and house selected animal species; maintain related records. Assist with restraint, handling, and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site Supervisor. Receive, inspect and pack/unpack animals for transport; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area and comply with the current rodent sentinel SOP.
  • Prepare special diets or watering in accordance with principal investigators' protocols, and ensure special diets are provided to correct animals. Administer commonly used and easily administered treatments or medications as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Assist in specialized monitoring and surveillance programs. Review, comprehend, and comply with all SOPs and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area. Maintain accurate departmental animal housing or support area record keeping. May assist in maintenance of breeding programs.
  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality of health of research animals, to include: perform daily water/cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; observe all animals and record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • Order, receive, and distribute feed, bedding, and general supplies; maintain related records.
  • Participate in providing on-the-job training and mentorship of Animal Technicians, Animal Care Attendants and Trainees. May provide direction and guidance to Animal Technicians.
  • Comply with and wear required personal protective equipment. Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines.
  • Perform basic general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures. Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary animal care equipment.
  • Observe and report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems. Perform tasks of lower level technicians or attendants as needed.
  • Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed. Ability to work weekends or holidays on a rotating basis as assigned. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time. May be required to shower/change clothes between functions.
  • Ability to read and understand oral/written instructions in English. Ability to work while wearing personnel protective equipment for prolonged periods of time to duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
