What we need

We are looking for a Senior Applied Scientist, Robotics and Perception to join our Perception R&D team within our Hardware R& D org. Your job will be to develop cutting-edge technologies, adapting existing solutions, and rapidly prototyping innovative concepts to enhance our warehouse automation systems and robots. Your expertise in perception algorithms, computer vision, and hands-on experience with various sensors will be instrumental in driving our technological advancements.

What we do

The Perception R&D team is part of Symbotic's Hardware R&D organization which is at the forefront of technology development and adaptation. We focus on fast prototyping and demonstrating proof of concepts for various technologies, sensors, and algorithms in our robotic and warehouse automation systems. Our main goal is to improve our automation solutions through innovation, with a special emphasis on perception and computer vision applications. 

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and optimize perception algorithms for robotic systems, particularly AGVs 

  • Develop and apply computer vision algorithms, leveraging both traditional and deep learning-based approaches 

  • Prototype and build proof of concepts for innovative robotics and perception solutions 

  • Collaborate with hardware engineers and software engineers in an interdisciplinary team environment 

  • Contribute to the integration of various sensors (LIDAR, camera, radar, laser range sensor, IR time of flight sensors) into our robotic systems 

  • Explore and implement cutting-edge AI, ML, and deep learning techniques to enhance our automation solutions 

  • Participate in the entire product development lifecycle, from concept to implementation 

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in robotics, perception, and computer vision technologies  

What you need

  • MS or higher in Robotics, Computer Science or related field; PhD in Robotics, Computer Science is preferred 

  • Minimum 6 years of work experience with MS, or minimum of 3 years with PhD

  • Proven experience implementing perception algorithms and computer vision solutions 

  • Proficiency in Python and C++ 

  • Hands-on experience with prototyping and building proof of concepts 

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to deal with ambiguity 

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing requirements 

  • Can-do attitude and willingness to tackle complex challenges 

  • Up to 20% travel may be required 

Preferred qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of Robot Operating System (ROS) and ROS 2 

  • Strong familiarity with Linux-based systems and real-time operating systems 

  • Direct experience with robots, specifically AGVs 

  • Exposure to edge computing and firmware development 

  • Familiarity with various aspects of AI, ML, and deep learning 

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch 

  • Experience with different perception sensors (LIDAR, camera, radar, laser range sensor, IR time of flight sensors) 

  • Knowledge of warehouse automation systems 

  • Experience in highly integrated electro-mechanical systems, mechatronics, or robotics product development teams 

Our environment

  • Up to 20% travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed bi-weekly.
