Job Description:
Clark Nexsen is seeking a Senior Building Automation System (BAS) Designer who is passionate about energy performance and sustainability in the built environment to join our Energy Consulting Team. Our Energy Consulting Team provides design and consulting services related to decarbonization, renewable energy, microgrids, and energy efficiency projects. We are driven to make the world a better place through our work.A Senior BAS Designer will be responsible for all aspects of the design and testing of facility control systems including direct digital HVAC, lighting and daylighting, SCADA, and industrial PLC. This position will require domestic and international travel. Up to 50% of working hours could occur in the field at local sites or out of town.General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Designing control systems including system diagrams, sequence of operation, point schedules, and logic diagrams
  • Evaluating existing control systems and making recommendations for expansion, upgrades, and integration
  • Reviewing control systems designed by mechanical and electrical engineers
  • Meeting with project managers and senior engineers to prepare and/or validate proposed scope of work
  • Providing oversight and coordination of projects, and working with project managers to meet client's budget, contract fees, goals, objectives, and deadlines
  • Coordinating and communicating all aspects of control system design within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Supervising and mentoring junior design staff and CADD technicians
  • Providing input to senior engineer and project manager for project evolution
  • Developing schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents
  • Providing support services during the bidding process, i.e., preparing addenda and amendments and responding to RFI's
  • Performing services required during the construction phase, i.e., representing the firm on-site, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings
  • Complying with all quality control policies and procedures and providing QC reviews for other designers
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from senior engineers and project managers
  • Working independently with limited direction
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Create coordinated controls designs based on engineered system designs. System types will include packaged rooftop, VAV air handling, primary/secondary and variable primary chilled and hot water, dust collection, kitchen ventilation, booster pumping, domestic hot water circulation, daylighting, SCADA, and various industrial pump and fan processes.
  • Visit existing facilities and work with clients and contractors to develop work scopes for controls upgrades, control system expansions, and integration of buildings and equipment into campus or base wide Utility Monitoring and Control Systems (UMCS) which can function in a Smart Grid environment
  • Represent the firm's interest during commissioning and acceptance testing of engineered systems
  • Work with code officials, contractors, and clients to resolve issues during design and construction
  • Develop specifications for control system components using UFGS and AIA master specification templates
  • Responsible for document organization and clarity
  • Assisting with the preparation of fee proposals
  • Direct the work of small teams on larger project efforts
  • Coordinate work product with other disciplines
  • Adhere to project budget and schedule
Education, Technology, and Experience
  • Have earned a high school diploma, or equivalent, and completed coursework in AutoCAD and/or BIM software packages from a technical or vocational school; or
  • An associate's degree in a field of study related to engineering or drafting and design; or
  • A four-year undergraduate degree in a field of study related to mechanical or electrical engineering
  • Test and Balance Engineer (TBE), Testing Adjusting and Balancing (TAB), or similar is desirable
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices and pursuing LEED AP accreditation is desirable
  • A Senior BAS Designer should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, computations (Excel), and information management.
  • Basic skills for editing drawings in AutoCAD and Revit
  • A Senior BAS Designer should typically have 12 years or more of significant experience working with facility control systems. This experience could be as a Project Engineer for a controls vendor, a Commissioning Agent, or a Plant Engineer. In addition to direct experience with controls systems, a Senior BAS Designer will also have some experience with facility design.
  • Experience in Federal DoD projects and project delivery methods is desirable.
