Job Description:

My client is a niche environmental consulting firm specializing in environmental impact assessments, project permitting and management, regulatory engagement, Indigenous stakeholder engagement, and regulatory compliance. While their primary focus is on the mining and mineral exploration sector, they also support projects in renewables, heavy industrial, transportation, and construction. They lead permitting and regulatory affairs for numerous projects and are currently seeking a Senior Closure and Reclamation Engineer. This role involves supporting the start-up of mining companies, aiding in financial forecasts for project viability, and managing reclamation and closure projects. Future growth opportunities include business development and team building. Key responsibilities include project financial modeling, execution logistics, and liability cost estimation. The role requires collaboration with internal teams to produce deliverables for engineering studies, funding applications, and financial models related to market offtakes, project logistics, due diligence, and reclamation cost estimates. Externally, the position involves working with clients, regulators, and agencies in areas such as rail, transportation, energy, and mine design to address project intake and offtake needs, direct studies, and secure agreements for project logistics. The scope also includes coordinating with environment, permitting, and Indigenous engagement teams to integrate engineering requirements. Remote / WFH / Hybrid: 100% Remote anywhere in Canada or the US Salary: $140k - $190k CAD, with benefits, RRSP matching, bonuses Travel: Minimal anywhere in North America Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Manage Financial and Liability Datasets: Establish, organize, and maintain comprehensive datasets related to financial planning, liability assessments, and reclamation cost estimates for closure projects.
  • Analyze and Interpret Financial Flowsheets: Evaluate financial data, including cash flows and cost structures, to assess project economics and develop accurate budget forecasts for reclamation efforts.
  • Conduct Project Economic Assessments: Perform detailed economic analyses to determine the viability and cost-effectiveness of different closure and reclamation strategies, including cost-benefit evaluations.
  • Evaluate Mine Designs for Closure Planning: Analyze mine design data to identify feasible closure options, estimate reclamation liabilities, and develop detailed cost projections for site rehabilitation.
  • Plan and Oversee Logistics and Material Transportation: Conduct studies to determine efficient logistics and transportation methods for materials, equipment, and resources required during the reclamation process.
  • Perform Market Analysis: Assess market conditions to inform project development and closure strategies, including the valuation of assets, materials, and by-products associated with the site.
  • Contribute to Trade-Off Studies: Participate in the development of trade-off studies, providing technical input and authoring sections to compare various project development and closure scenarios, guiding decision-making.
  • Integrate Environmental and Regulatory Requirements into Engineering Design: Ensure that environmental standards and regulatory requirements are embedded within the project's engineering design, ensuring compliance and sustainability throughout the closure process.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in closure, reclamation, or engineering feasibility studies
  • Registered Professional (e.g., P.Eng.)
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • Strong knowledge of federal and provincial/state regulations ideally in both Canada and the US
  • Proven experience in designing and leading trade-off studies
  • Proficiency with financial models and liability estimates
  • Background in the mining/resource sector
  • Experience communicating technical studies to stakeholders, regulators, First Nations, and the scientific/engineering community
  • Familiarity with Canadian/provincial environmental impact assessment and liability cost estimation
  • Project management, account management, and business development skills
  • Team building and external client management experience
  • Willingness to travel to project sites 2-3 times per year
  • Valid driver's license
