Job Description:Position Summary:The National Audubon Society (NAS) owns a significant amount of artwork (art, library materials, archives, and other objects) including museum quality assets (the collections ). The Senior Coordinator, Museum and Collections will help assess, manage, protect, and administer those collections. The Senior Coordinator is responsible for stewarding the John James Audubon Center (JJAC) collections and museum experiences through exhibition and programming. Beyond the collections at JJAC, the Senior Coordinator will continue the current efforts to catalogue, obtain appraisals, and formulate a collection strategy for all NAS's art collections, which are currently located around the United States, primarily in NAS's various Centers. The Senior Coordinator will travel up to 20% of the time to visit these art assets.This role will report to the VP of Operations, and be working closely with the Director, Southeastern Pennsylvania Centers. It is anticipated that the role will spend approximately 50% on NAS's art collections distributed throughout the network and 50% focused on the gallery at JJAC.This is a full-time, regular position based at the John James Audubon Center in Mill Grove, PA.Compensation:$65,000-$75,000 / yearAdditional Job DescriptionEssential Functions
  • Develop and implement strategies for the preservation and conservation of art, including proper handling, storage, and display techniques. Work with other Centers to ensure proper care.
  • Curate exhibitions that showcase different themes, artists, or movements from our collection, working closely with artists, lenders, and exhibition designers.
  • Oversee the installation and deinstallation of art exhibitions to enhance Audubon's educational outreach, ensuring that proper protocols are followed to protect the artwork and maintain its integrity.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with artists, collectors, galleries, and other stakeholders in the art community to facilitate acquisitions, loans, and sales.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across NAS to identify opportunities for exhibiting art within our organization's spaces, including nature centers and offices, and/or public galleries and appropriate public spaces in alignment with our Community Engagement strategy.
  • Update the Art Policy as needed.
  • Assist with management decisions regarding potential sales opportunities for artworks in the collection, negotiating terms and agreements with buyers and managing the sales process from start to finish.
  • Stay informed about trends and developments in the art world, attending exhibitions, conferences, and other relevant events as necessary.
  • Take inventory and catalog the organization's art collection, maintaining accurate records of each piece's location, provenance, condition, and valuation.
  • Coordinate with insurance providers to ensure adequate valuation and coverage for the art collection and manage any claims or appraisals as needed.
  • Serve as liaison with appropriate Montgomery County, PA employees regarding care and maintenance of shared collections spaces and objects.
  • Lead emergency preparedness planning and building security as it relates to the collection at JJAC.
  • Supervise individuals and groups of volunteers assigned to local museum projects such as collections management, data entry, etc.
  • Conduct research to understand the historical and cultural significance of various artworks in the collection.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, art history, fine arts or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • At least three years of experience in a museum, gallery, or cultural institution setting with collections, programming, tours, etc.
  • Familiarity with art valuation principles and practices, including appraisal methods and market trends.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands effectively.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and conservation for artwork.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Experience with PastPerfect (or other CMS), MS Office, and Photoshop, are required.
  • Effective and efficient time management skills are critical.
  • Candidates must be able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule (weekends, evenings, holidays) as required. Will require travel approximately 20% of the time.
