Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will serve as the primary in-house counsel in a low-drama and collegial office at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice regarding the laws applicable to tax-exempt organizations.
  • Advise Foundation leadership and staff on new program developments, grant proposals and agreements, fundraising, and sponsorships.
  • Help program staff strategically plan programs and agreements to ensure compliance with all applicable domestic and international laws.
  • Counsel on corporate governance and organization policies.
  • Advise on qualified sponsorships, UBTI, charitable activities, educational activities, grantmaking, Form 990 reporting, structuring and managing relationships with affiliated entities, lobbying activities, and other tax matters.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate agreements.
  • Function as an integral part of a friendly, collaborative in-house legal team.
  • Work closely with other operational departments such as Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology.

Qualifications:

  • Experienced exempt organizations attorney with 5+ years' legal experience working with tax-exempt organizations.
  • Juris Doctor degree with strong academic performance during law school.
  • Strong business sense and client focus.
  • Demonstrated managerial aptitude and excellent client relations.
  • Ability to oversee the work of outside counsel.
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters for multiple clients and set and adjust priorities.
  • Sound judgment.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Previous in-house legal experience a plus.
  • Membership in good standing in, or eligibility to waive into, the District of Columbia Bar a plus.

The salary range for this position is $151,900.00 to $184,000.00, with the possibility of additional compensation through a discretionary bonus. The actual salary paid for this position will vary based on market data, an applicant's qualifications, relevant degrees, certifications, and other factors. Our full-time employees are eligible for benefits, including health care, vision, dental, retirement, and paid leave.
