As privately held company with nearly 80 years of history, we are looking for a Senior Customs Compliance Specialist to join our team and play a key role in refining our customs compliance processes. In this role, you'll be responsible for managing Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) operations, meticulously auditing customs declarations, and verifying entry documents to ensure accuracy and prevent potential duty drawback issues or costly penalties. As the Senior Customs Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring all import and export activities are in full compliance with local, state, federal, and international regulations. You will handle the day-to-day FTZ and inventory-related activities to support overall FTZ operations. Leveraging your licensed customs broker and/or certified customs specialist qualifications, you will lead the company's customs efforts and guide the team to align with best practices & standards. This is a HYBRID position and must be onsite at our Romeoville, IL headquarters 3 days a week. What you will do:
  • Administers the documentation processes required to import merchandise and materials in compliance with global regulations, including federal, state, local, or country specific regulations.
  • Prepare and file all necessary documents for all admissions within the FTZ (E214)
  • Prepare and file FTZ weekly estimates & withdrawals (3461 & 7501)
  • Ensure all documentation is up to date and data is recorded in AS400 and Questa Web
  • Submit and review all necessary FTZ operational forms and reports for accuracy.
  • Handle required payment transactions for shipments, including freight and vendor payments.
  • Oversee the classification of products under the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) and ensure accurate application of duty rates.
  • Stay informed with changes in import & trade regulations and ensure compliance with all relevant customs laws and requirements. Make necessary adjustments to company policies & practices.
  • Provide expert knowledge on Free Trade Agreements, special programs, and exemptions.
  • Regularly audit customs declarations, entry documents, and related paperwork for accuracy, to prevent potential duty drawback issues or penalties.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and guidance to team members, ensuring they are aligned with best practices and company standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams like purchasing, and finance to ensure aligned communication and adherence to regulations.
  • Act as the primary contact for customs-related disputes, inquiries, or audits, representing the company's interests.
  • Generate comprehensive reports on customs compliance activities, audit results, and compliance metrics for management review.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What you need:
  • In-depth knowledge of customs regulations, tariff classifications, and import and export documentation requirements.
  • Ability to remain current on changes in import or export laws or regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Proficient in Questa Web or equivalent FTZ software.
  • Strong planning, organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solution based thinking and multi-task fast paced dynamic environment.
  • AS400 or similar systems experience a plus.
  • Licensed Customs Broker OR Certified Customs Specialist preferred
