This role is the engineering lead for NYT Cooking's line of business, and reports to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the New York Times. You will work with partners in Product, Design, and Data to help our Engineering team bring new user experiences to our Cooking product.
NYT Cooking is at the cusp of an exciting time as we expand our platforms and technical strategy to explore new and unique ways to meet the daily needs of home cooks of all levels, especially as user expectations change rapidly. You will lead technical initiatives to continue NYT Cooking's path to be the indispensable companion for all home cooks. Specifically, you'll drive the execution of our product transformation to video, the creation of new search and personalization experiences, and evolve our publishing tools and workflow for a growing team of writers and editors. Our product spans web and mobile applications.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office twice per week.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of engineers and managers to deliver the technical strategy for NYT Cooking and The New York Times overall
- Communicate and translategoals of the NYT Cooking mission, ensuring that staff understand their purpose and deliverables
- Coordinate with other technology teams across the company to create the right solutions, manage expectations, and keep strategies aligned
- Coach and develop engineers and engineering managers
- Create an inclusive team culture, recruit for, and retain extraordinary engineering talent
- Work closely with NYT Cooking's General Manager, Editorial team, and other functional leads to determine the right technical solutions to NYT Cooking's product and editorial aspirations.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience leading large, complex, and motivated engineering teams
- 5+ years of experience managing managers
- Experience running platforms at scale supporting consumer product development across web and mobile surfaces
- Experience working in complex product organizations, supporting stakeholders with diverse and sometimes conflicting technical and product requirements
- Experience leading engineering for multi-platform applications (web, Android, and iOS)
- Experience leading engineering teams building direct-to-consumer applications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical knowledge of large-scale Ruby on Rails applications
- Experience leading distributed teams
- Experience working at a multi-product company
