Job Title: Senior Editor, ASI Position Location: Onsite at AOPA Headquarters in Frederick, MD Summary The AOPA Air Safety Institute (ASI) is dedicated to advancing general aviation (GA) safety through cutting-edge research, comprehensive analysis, and dynamic educational outreach. As the Senior Editor, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the voice and quality of ASI's content across multiple platforms, including print, digital publications, video scripts, and promotional materials. Your editorial expertise will be crucial in engaging our audience, fostering AOPA membership growth, and reinforcing ASI's mission. This role requires a seasoned professional who can lead with creativity, manage a network of freelance contributors, and ensure the highest editorial standards are met consistently. Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Content Creation: Produce original, insightful, and engaging written content that provides fresh perspectives on general aviation safety. Ensure all materials are well-researched, accurate, and aligned with ASI's mission.
  • Content Leadership: Drive the creation and curation of compelling safety content that resonates with AOPA members and supports membership expansion. Oversee the development and quality control of materials across various channels, including publications, research reports, video scripts, newsletters, marketing emails, and social media.
  • Freelance Management: Lead the recruitment, onboarding, and management of freelance writers who contribute to ASI's work, ensuring their work aligns with ASI's standards of excellence. Provide clear guidance, feedback, and quality control to maintain the integrity of all editorial outputs.
  • Mentorship and Development: Offer coaching and professional development to emerging aviation writers within the ASI team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and editorial excellence.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to innovate and execute new content strategies that drive AOPA membership growth and revenue. Actively participate in shaping ASI's editorial direction and outreach initiatives.
  • Project Management: Oversee the planning and execution of ASI's editorial calendar, ensuring timely delivery of content and maintaining a robust pipeline of high-quality material.
  • Representation: Serve as a key representative of ASI within AOPA, contributing to cross-departmental initiatives and ensuring editorial goals are met.
Experience and Education Requirements
  • Experience: 5-10 years of experience in aviation writing, editing, and managing editorial quality, with a strong portfolio demonstrating leadership in content creation and editorial project coordination.
  • Aviation Expertise: Minimum FAA Private Pilot Certificate with an instrument rating, underscoring your understanding of general aviation.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, or a related field. Significant related professional experience may substitute degree requirement.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead creative projects, mentor teams, and drive content innovation. Strong organizational and project management skills are essential.
  • Communication Excellence: Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrates initiative, punctuality, teamwork, and a positive attitude toward constructive feedback. Self-motivated with a strong commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, etc.) and comfortable adapting to new tools and technologies as needed.
Additional position details: This position works out of the Frederick, MD location and is not eligible for remote status. The salary range for this position is:$76,000 - $85,000 depending on experience.
