Job Description:

Positions in this class involve the application of a high degree of technical, mechanical and electrical skill in the over-all operation and maintenance of a large steam or hot water plant on an assigned shift. This class differs from First Class Stationary Engineers in that incumbents have a greater degree of responsibility for plant operations and directing the work of subordinate personnel. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, however, incumbents exercise independent judgment in planning work assignments. Supervision is received from a higher-ranking stationary engineer who checks through periodic inspection tours and work reports. Supervision may be exercised over personnel assigned.On an assigned shift; supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of a large steam or hot water plant;

* supervises and assists in repairs to boilers, pumps, fans and compressors, valves, heat exchangers;

* dismantles and cleans plant machinery;

* performs electrical and steam fitting repair work to plant machinery;

* maintains stock records and orders necessary parts and supplies;

* inspects equipment and submits work orders for preventive and corrective repairs;

May prepare work schedules for subordinates;

* periodically inspects operations and completed work;

May be required to take samples of boiler water;

* mixes and applies chemical treatment;

May be required to take readings, check meters and regulate fuel;

May supervise necessary building maintenance and cleaning work;

May be responsible for the security of buildings and opening of buildings for the public;

Drives to and from work site;

Performs related work as required.Promotional

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Maintenance Assistant (Water), Heating Equipment Service Worker, Junior Housing Project Engineer or First Class Engineer-Custodian for one year.

Possession of a current First Class Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Buffalo that must be presented at time of filing application.

Special Requirement,

Possession of a current NYS Drivers License that must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.

1. Possession of a current First Class Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Buffalo that must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.

2. Possession of a current New York State Drivers License that must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of steam and high temperature hot water generating and distribution systems including related mechanical and electrical power plant equipment;

Thorough knowledge of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing systems,

including related electrical and mechanical trades and machine shop practices;

Good knowledge of practices and procedures governing energy management, conservation, environmental and safety practices;

Ability to understand and interpret regulatory rules and principles of OSHA, EPA and DEC;

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;

Ability to follow oral and written directions;

Ability to work on an assigned shift;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
