Job Description and Duties
The position assists the Research Scientist II in the Invasive Species Program in the processing and analysis of plankton samples collected from waterbodies throughout the state to determine the presence of quagga/zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species. The incumbent is responsible for receiving, handling, processing, and analyzing samples, recording and maintaining associated data, data entry and quality control, and coordination and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies. This position is a laboratory position that requires the application of microscopy and molecular methods. The incumbent will also assist with the field sampling and the training of new program staff on sample collection, sample preservation, storage, and shipping.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.
Class Title: Senior Laboratory Assistant/Exam Bulletin
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions
This is a laboratory position with occasional field work. Position location is being considered in Santa Cruz or Bodega.
