Associate General Counsel, Solar Energy Contracts

Location: New York City, NY or Baltimore, MD

I am partnered with a fast-growing start-up company in the solar energy sector who are dedicated to revolutionizing the industry. This forward-thinking company focuses on the development, construction, and long-term operation of innovative solar power systems, including rooftop and canopy installations. Their mission is to make solar energy accessible and efficient for businesses, contributing to a greener future and providing reliable, clean energy solutions.

They are seeking an Associate General Counsel to join their legal team, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This role will be crucial in managing legal matters related to their solar projects. The successful candidate will handle contracts and agreements, navigate state regulations, and collaborate with various internal teams and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a range of contracts, including development, construction, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contracts, and related agreements.
  • Provide legal support for early-stage project development, ensuring compliance with relevant state requirements for selling power and distributed generation.
  • Work closely with internal teams, including early development and EPC teams, as well as operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Serve as a legal advisor to senior management, guiding legal aspects of project execution and interfacing with potential customers.
  • Ensure adherence to state and local regulations related to distributed generation and power sales.
  • Experience:

  • 4-7 years of legal experience in the solar industry, gained at either big law firms or in-house.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Strong expertise in the solar industry, particularly with solar projects, development, construction contracts, and PPAs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with internal teams and external partners.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail, with a capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
