SENIOR MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Senior Maintenance Repairer within the Office of Project Control.

This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

DEFINITION: Under direction, performs a variety of the more complex maintenance and repair tasks involved in masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steam fitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, or other types of maintenance work and may take the lead in a small maintenance unit; does related work.

NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.

2. One (1) year of experience in maintenance work involving a variety of tasks.

3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

4. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Erects simple forms, mixes cement and aggregates, pours, and does the finishing work involved in concrete structures.

2. Patches and repairs brick and concrete structures.

3. Repairs damaged plastered walls and ceilings.

4. Installs and repairs locks and fixtures, spackles and paints interior and exterior metal, wood, and masonry surfaces.

5. Repairs and constructs simple wooden structures.

6. Repairs plumbing stoppages and leaks in copper, iron, and other pipe.

7. Replaces washers and gaskets, and makes general service repairs.

8. Does general sheet metal work involved in repairing roofs, drain boards, and rainspouts.

9. Replaces light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, fixture cords, and switches.

10. Replaces broken glass and reputties.

11. Changes lubricants, refuels, and does light maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.

12. Cleans tools and equipment.

13. May work from instructions or work orders.

14. Inspects completed work and may take the lead over a small maintenance unit.

15. Keeps essential records and files.

16. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

17. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices and of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.

2. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out verbal and written directions.

3. Ability to take precautions in performing the work.

4. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.

5. Ability to maintain essential records and files.

6. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

7. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD, AND UNION AFFILIATION

* Salary Range: $52,983 - $55,076 (salary for SY 2024-2025)

* Employment Period: Twelve (12) months

* Union Affiliation: Local 617
