CATF is highly respected for its deep expertise and research on energy and industrial systems and potential strategies, technologies, and policies that can radically shrink their impact on the planet's atmosphere. Our team of experts and advocates (and global network of subject matter experts and civil society partners) put this research and knowledge into action by designing and enacting public policies that drive toward zero emissions. We also support policies and work directly with private industry to innovate in technology to make the path to zero emissions swift and affordable. CATF has offices in Boston, Washington D.C., and Brussels, with staff working virtually around the world.ROLEThe Senior Manager, Fusion Safety and Regulation will play a pivotal role in managing CATF's international working group on fusion safety. This role involves overseeing CATF's work in safety, regulatory, environmental, and non-proliferation aspects of fusion energy, as well as advancing public acceptance and stakeholder engagement efforts. The expert will contribute to the development of fusion energy policies, produce key deliverables for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as well as for states. They will also provide input for safety and regulatory aspects at the international level.Fusion energy is a cornerstone of the clean energy transition, offering unparalleled potential to provide a firm source of energy that can also contribute to the energy transition. CATF's international working group on fusion safety is a key initiative driving the development of harmonized safety and regulatory frameworks for fusion technologies. This role is critical for advancing CATF's leadership in fusion energy, ensuring the timely delivery of impactful solutions that shape policies across NATO fusion nations and beyond.Key Functions and Responsibilities:Leadership and management:
  • Manage and oversee CATF's international working group on fusion safety, a flagship initiative involving experts from the U.S., EU, and the UK.
  • Supervise and coordinate the contributions of four consultants, ensuring cohesive delivery of outputs.
  • Act as a key representative for CATF in official forums and international meetings when required.
  • Monitor and participate at NRC initiatives as well as other regulatory relevant events.
  • Contribute to the set up of a Fusion Safety Academy.Deliverables and program oversight:
    • Ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of critical outputs, including:
      • White papers and recommendations on fusion safety and regulation from technical and policy aspects, including:
        • Harmonized regulatory frameworks
        • Radioactive waste management
        • Non-proliferation and export controls
        • Public acceptance and stakeholder engagement strategies
        • Fusion safety and regulation training course
        • Coordinate the development of impactful outputs that position CATF as a leader in shaping global fusion policies.Stakeholder engagement and representation:
          • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration with industry leaders, policymakers, and advocacy groups.
          • Represent CATF's interests at high-profile forums, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and goals.
          • Foster strong partnerships with global stakeholders to advance harmonized safety and regulatory frameworks.Resource management and collaboration:
            • Work closely with CATF's legal and advocacy teams in the U.S., EU, and the UK to align program strategies.
            • Optimize coordination and resource allocation to support seamless delivery of program outputs.
            • Ensure integration of fusion safety initiatives across CATF's global initiatives.Skills/Qualifications:
              • Advanced degree in nuclear engineering, energy policy, environmental science, physics, or a related field, with a focus on nuclear safety or fusion technologies.
              • 10+ years of relevant experience in nuclear safety, regulation, or fusion energy, with demonstrated leadership in managing complex initiatives.
              • Proven track record of producing high-impact policy documents, white papers, or reports related to nuclear or fusion energy.
              • Strong background in engaging with regulatory bodies, policymakers, and industry leaders.
              • Skilled at driving results in a matrixed and fast-paced environment, balancing competing priorities and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
              • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences, including policymakers, industry experts, and the public.
              • Proven ability to facilitate collaboration and build strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, such as regulatory agencies, advocacy groups, and fusion energy companies.
              • Ability to anticipate emerging trends and challenges in fusion energy and proactively develop innovative strategies to address them.
              • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams across regions, fostering alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
              • Familiarity with advocacy and public engagement strategies, especially those related to advancing acceptance of fusion energy technologies.
