JOB DESCRIPTION:The Senior Mechanical Engineer acts as the resident expert on product design, specifications, and will develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment; conferring with equipment vendors. Acts as the resident expert on production lines, actively supports operations assists maintenance in troubleshooting issues with existing equipment. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and coordinate special projects, including design and fabrication of production equipment (automated and semi-automated assembly and secondary machines, etc.), material selection and tooling requirements
- Evaluate existing mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems for improved yield and throughput
- Develops mechanical/electromechanical fixtures and machines by studying customer requirements
- Collaborate with quality and process engineers, and other departments to obtain necessary requirements for writing detailed scopes for the procurement of new equipment
- Assures system and product quality by designing test methods; testing finished product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes
- Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special services
- Assists maintenance with troubleshooting and repairing production equipment
- Estimate tooling cost from design through fabrication
- Coordinate with machine vendor through concept, design, fabrication, runoff and setup of equipment
- Work with cross functional teams to develop efficient manufacturing processes
- Interface with vendors that provide patented machined parts that are used in finished product
- Must work with minimal supervision and provide technical, creative and practical solutions to challenging problems
- Develop and maintain detailed work instructions for assigned products/processes in collaboration with Quality and EH&S.
- Assist maintenance in troubleshooting downtime issues, developing preventative maintenance plan, and spare parts requirements.
- Serve as production equipment mechanical expert
- Lead research and development projects and product improvement initiatives
- Perform other job assignments as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms
- The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and kneel
- The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop or crawl
- The employee must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
- Ability to travel as needed
EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- A four-year degree is preferred, but candidates without a degree who have extensive relevant experience will also be considered
- Proficient with 3D CAD - SolidWorks is preferred, but candidates with Pro/E, Inventor, Catia or similar software will also be considered
- Some knowledge of FEA software is ideal
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Candidates must be able to obtain an Employee Possessor Letter of Clearance issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives
- Language Skills: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, peers and individual employees
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Experience designing and maintaining hydraulic/pneumatic presses and automated assembly machines with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Extensive knowledge of a variety of mechanical systems; hydraulics, pneumatics, materials
- Knowledge of OSHA Standards
- Understanding of basic machining processes and principles
- Experience designing munitions is desired, but not required
- Experience with explosives and pyrotechnics is desired, but not required
