Job Title: Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) - Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)

Reports to: Campus Principal

Dept/School: Physical Education / Lebanon Trail High School

Work Year: 226 Days

Base Salary: Actual salary will be calculated based on experience

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The SNSI is responsible for overseeing the instruction and operation of the NJROTC unit according to national, state, and District standards. The SNSI is responsible for implementing the Navy's national education curriculum and program requirements. This includes instructing military drill and extra-curriculars within the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program. The SNSI provides appropriate learning experiences as well as social and emotional development for students within the program. In addition, the SNSI helps cultivate an atmosphere and culture of learning and respect within the program as well as throughout the campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for subject and level assigned, or ability to obtain

Must be a retired United States Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard Officer

Must meet minimum qualifications required by the Department of Defense

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of academic subject assigned

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction as it pertains to NJROTC courses

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Effective instructional delivery techniques and ability to motivate students to excel

Experience:

Quality experience in starting a NJROTC program is preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Strategies:

Teach the prescribed four-year Naval Science curriculum.

Instruct cadets in military drill.

Counsel cadets in the NJROTC program and mentor cadets about post high school education, military service, and employment opportunities.

Train and mentor the unit's color guard/honor guard and drill team.

Requisition required equipment including uniforms, training aids, books, drill and air rifles, and other related military equipment.

Arrange for cleaning, tailoring, and storage of uniforms.

Ensure proper physical security of all government furnished equipment/materials.

Mentor cadets and assist with higher education or employment opportunities and goals.

Plan, lead, and attend extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit (including color/honor guard ceremonies, competitive meets for drill and rifle teams, field trips, basic leadership training, and ship cruises).

Assess unit progress to assure NJROTC program objectives are met.

Establish positive relationships with school counselors and faculty members.

Prepare and disseminate periodic reports on program administration and logistics.

Attend Navy sponsored training to keep abreast of current program requirements.

Participate in and facilitate professional learning within the campus and District to improve teaching abilities and offer learning experiences.

Assist with annual presentations of the NJROTC program to students at feeder schools for the purpose of recruiting new cadets into the program.

Maintain financial accounts for any Navy budget/accountable items.

Work cooperatively with civic and community groups to obtain recognition and support of the program.

Student Growth and Development:

Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.

Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.

Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.

Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization:

Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Accompany and supervise cadets during competitions and out-of-town trips.

Instruct and advise cadets on regulations regarding academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.

Apply and enforce student discipline during contests, practice sessions, and off-campus trips in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Encourage sportsmanlike conduct by example and through instruction, in all phases of competition.

Communication:

Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.

Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Administration:

Assist in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.

Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within the program.

Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all equipment related to the NJROTC unit.

Professional Growth and Development:

Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

Keep informed of and comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise future Naval Science Instructors as well as other leadership positions within the unit.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, driving, pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment. Frequent district wide and statewide travel; frequent and prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor exposure to sun and heat. Moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot) and vehicle fumes.
