As a member of the Networking and Telecommunications team this position provides technical support including design, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of the college's networking and telecommunications infrastructure. This position will also be responsible for running hardware and software diagnostics and identifying and resolving problems. The position is also responsible for complex testing and analysis of all elements of the network infrastructure including server, software, and communication devices. This position will serve as backup support to other Networking and Telecommunication Services areas.
Major Responsibilities
Primary Technical Responsibilities
* Follow project plans and designs to implement new systems and networks and meet specific project needs such as schedule, performance, and cost. Install, configure, and resolve conflicts among hardware and software systems used to provide new network services
* Recommend appropriate network equipment and cabling for a given situation. Primary responsibilities in this area include implementation and upgrade of switched and wireless networks, routing, plans, UPS systems and cable plant. Assist in the review of networking and telecommunications sections of Facilities construction designs
* Administer network and telecom systems in use at SUNY Cortland and its satellite locations. Identify and resolve performance problems, failures, and other issues that arise within these systems. Mitigate the root cause of service interruptions and effectively utilize vendor service contracts
* Respond to daily network and telecom help tickets. Monitor network systems and respond to problems, alerts, and alarms. Provide mentoring and training for students or part-time personnel when needed
* Provide technical support to network users and help nontechnical people understand and use complex equipment and software. Support network and telecom needs of campus construction surge efforts. Interface effectively with customers and other members of the IR team
* Respond to after-hours network emergencies on occasion
Communications
* Promote active communication between functional users and team members. Contribute appropriately to conversations and meetings. Accurately prepare written and verbal correspondence that is coherent, effective and professional
* Effectively communicate project timelines, readiness and status updates to the director and functional users on a regular basis
* Communicate effectively with manufacturer's technical support and help desk personnel for support assistance
Documentation
* Document procedures, diagrams, and enhance network documentation of the campus LAN and Internet, IP address management, edge security equipment, wireless systems, telecommunications systems, and UPS units
* Maintain and review a centrally located repository of documentation. Repositories can include the Help Center ticketing system and project management application (currently Team Dynamix), asset management tracking system, N&T shared drive and other office tools. Provide feedback and recommendations to improve organization's documentation systems and processes
Security
* Configure and support evolving network security technology building on the ISE security framework, including evaluation of benefits of advanced features
* Maintain knowledge of SUNY Cortland, State of New York, and Federal information security policies: FERPA, GLB, Red Flag, PCI, and any relevant records retention policies. Report any misuse or security vulnerability to the Security Officer
Strategic Planning
* Work with the director and team members to provide vision and leadership in developing and maintaining a sound strategic plan for the Networking and Telecommunications Department that support the goals and missions of Information Resources and the University
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
* Reports to the director of the Networking & Telecommunications department
* Supervises student and temporary support staff employees
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree with three or more years of direct professional experience deploying, configuring, and managing large campus or enterprise data networks, or in lieu of degree, seven years of full-time directly related experience, or a combination of higher education coursework and experience totaling seven years may be considered
* Experience presenting and exchanging technical information with other technicians
* Customer service experience
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in management information systems, computer science or related field
* Experience managing Cisco switches and routers including hardware and IOS software, configuration and troubleshooting
* Experience managing Cisco Data Center switches
* Experience managing Cisco Enterprise Firewalls
* Relevant Cisco technical network certification such as CCNA or CCNP
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)
* Knowledge of relevant computer and networking terminology, protocols, and hardware
* Demonstrated technical troubleshooting skills in relevant networking and telecommunications technologies
* Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes in the industry; be highly detail oriented and communicate at both a technical and business level
* Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. regularly and occasionally move equipment up to 50 lbs.; maneuvering equipment in and out of inaccessible areas like sub-basements, mechanical rooms and up/down ladders and stairs. Use co-workers to team lift heavy things when necessary and tools on hand to make tasks easier such as dollies and step ladders
* Consistently demonstrate commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community in support of department, college and university mission.
* Willingness and ability to be aware of, understand and follow all college and university policies
* Demonstrated commitment and ability to stay current and learn technology related to the position

* Demonstrated ability to work in a team and with a high degree of independence and to be self-disciplined with the ability to handle priorities within multiple simultaneous tasks, and follow through with completion
