DEFINITIONTo perform skilled and lead supervisory work in the maintenance, repair, notification and upkeep of City parks and recreation landscape facilities and playground areas.
DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTICSThis is the advanced journey level class in the Park Maintenance series. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from lower level classes in the series by responsibility for directing the work of other park maintenance personnel including relaying work assignments and providing technical assistance. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform advanced park maintenance tasks with a minimum of supervision.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED - Receives direction from the Park Maintenance Supervisor.
- Exercise technical and functional supervision over maintenance staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following: - Lead and assist subordinates in landscaping maintenance, repair and litter control.
- Inspect and review the work of subordinates and supervise the planting of shrubs, grasses and tree trimming activities.
- Identify park and facilities in need of repairs; assist in the direction of repair, maintenance, and litter control tasks.
- Participate in fertilizing, spraying, and planting activities.
- Participate in all phases of landscape maintenance and repair work and assign personnel specific tasks.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on trucks and landscape maintenance equipment; keep trucks stocked with required supplies and materials.
- Operate mowers, weeders, and various park maintenance tools and equipment.
- Assist in custodial duties including mopping, dusting, vacuuming, waxing and buffing floors, and cleaning and repair of kitchen and restroom facilities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSFor indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fumes, odors, dust/mites, mechanical and chemical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, temperature swings and constant noise; walking; twisting body; working in trenches; stooping; standing; squatting; sitting; seeing; kneeling; grasping; climbing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 100 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; fine finger manipulation; operation of a weed eater, lawn mower, blower, edger, and a variety of hand tools; operating a motor vehicle through city traffic.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of: - Materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in landscape maintenance work.
- Procedures and techniques used in the planting, cultivating, propagating, fertilizing, and routine trimming of trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
- Plant pests and diseases, and methods for their control and eradication.
- Methods and practices used in the supervision and training of personnel.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
Ability to: - Lead landscape maintenance personnel in the performance of grounds and facility development, repair, and litter control tasks.
- Perform skilled park maintenance and repair activities.
- Operate and maintain a variety of equipment used in municipal park maintenance.
- Identify park and facility problems and supervise their correction.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Develop and maintain necessary written records, timesheets, schedules, and procedures.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCETwo years of increasingly responsible park and landscape maintenance work, supplemented by courses in horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field and a High School Diploma or GED.
