Categories: Facilities/MaintenancePosition Summary: The Senior Plumber, VIII performs various duties in the plumbing shop.Position Responsibilities:
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, electric and gas-fired water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners
- Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, replacing packing or valves, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains
- Assemble and modify piping systems composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and non-metals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools and power tools
- Install pipe hangers and anchors as required
- Insulate piping with adequate insulating material to prevent sweating and heating losses
- Join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, welding, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints
- Erect scaffolding or set up ladders to perform tasks above ground
- Keep work areas neat and clean
- Remove and/or install hydraulic systems, gas line systems, hot and cold risers, water supply and distribution to plumbing fixtures
- Install new plumbing drain lines and indirect connections to water lines in multi-floor buildings
- Read and understand blueprints/riser diagrams
- Keep up with new trade skills and technologies
- Perform all the duties of a plumber
- Install new and/or additions to standpipe and sprinkler systems
- Assign duties to staff and provide routine guidance
- Perform duties assigned as a member of the Fire Brigade
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Experience & Educational Background:
- A High School Diploma and 4 years of experience in the plumbing trade are required.
- Construction industry experience is preferred.
- Standpipe/sprinkler system Certificate of Fitness is preferred.
- A valid state-issued driver's license is preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Must possess the strength and dexterity needed to perform the job and the physical ability to move equipment as necessary
- Must adhere to operational safety rules and regulations as deemed by the University
- Must be able to follow directives and possess good communication skills and ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively
- Must be able to effectively provide direction to lower-level staff
- Respirator Fit Testing may be required
