Summary:

The Senior Supervising Producer 1A, working with minimal supervision from the Executive Producer, is responsible for the day-to-day needs of WAMU's nationally distributed live news talk show with a presence across multiple digital media platforms.The Senior Supervising Producer oversees the daily weekday output for all 1A's properties, on air and online. This position will manage and help the team meet a range of tight deadlines. The Senior Supervising Producer will work with 1A's Senior Managing Producer and Executive Producer and research and assignment of a wide range of political, cultural, sport, literary, and social topics; and play a leading role in the treatment and the shape of compelling story-telling air and online.

WAMU 88.5 is a public media station owned and operated by American University. WAMU is the source for local, regional and NPR news and original programs in Washington DC. Since 1961, WAMU has been amplifying voices and sharing stories from the many neighborhoods and communities in the District of Colombia, Maryland, and Virginia.

This position is part of WAMU's Content division. The Senior Supervising Producer oversees 3-5 producers, as well as several part-time producers and contractors on an as needed basis.

Essential Functions:

* Oversees the daily production & scheduling of original news making content for broadcast and digital platforms.

* Writes, edits scripts for the on-air host, frame issues for debate; identifies, contacts, and interviews potential guests under stringent time deadlines.

* Manages the daily execution of live segments related to national and international current events with an eye towards creating compelling content that sparks vibrant conversations on air and online.

* Takes the editorial lead on breaking news and meets demanding daily deadlines with minimal supervision.

* Manages the daily workflow to ensure multimedia content and deadlines are met.

* The incumbent seeks daily opportunities to engage with new and existing audiences to help match 1A's journalism with the cares and needs of its listeners.

* Supervises, trains and evaluates FT and PT direct reports.

* Provides direction, support and coaching to ensure the entire team is working towards a clear and shared vision for the show.

* Identifies new opportunities to broaden the skills base of the production team.

* Encourages team members to participate in wider WAMU events and opportunities.

* Oversees the writing, review, editing and distribution of daily promotional descriptions of upcoming programming to be used on air and online by WAMU personnel, the public information office at American University, and NPR stations which carry the program across the country.

* Serves as a representative of the show at conferences, donor events and member station and other public events.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

* Full-Time.

* 35 hrs per week.

Salary Range:

* $100,000 - $108,000 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

* 4-6 years of relevant experience.

* 6+years of experience in journalism and media, with at least 5 years working at a national level.

* 2-5 years' experience managing a team.

* Extensive news experience working on tight deadlines.

* Exceptional editorial judgment.

* Superb oral and written communication skills.

* Demonstrated ability to identify trends and to generate and execute complex creative ideas.

* Keen understanding of national and international current events, and excellent news and narrative judgment

* Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously and assimilate large amounts of information efficiently under daily deadline pressures.

* Proficiency with audio editing and multimedia production.

* Experience creating content for Facebook, Twitter and other emerging platforms.

* Experience working with content management systems (CMS).

* Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

* Proven ability to identify and vet dynamic and sought-after national and international guests.

Preferred Education and Experience:

* Master's degree or equivalent.

* 5-8 years of relevant experience.

* An established network of contacts with national and international newsmakers.

* Experience managing and producing content for a live daily talk program.

* Experience developing high-quality digital-only content.

* Proven ability to establish and grow online audiences.

Travel Required:

* Domestic and international travel might be required 4-5 times per year.
