Location: Bethesda, MD

Position Objective: Provide services as a Sensory Research Technician in support of the overall functions of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Pain Research Center at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH, Bethesda, Maryland campus) is accepting applications for a highly motivated full-time Sensory Research Technician. The Technician will have the opportunity to participate in several aspects of collaborative research studies across the NIH related to somatosensation and pain.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform data analysis of sensory, autonomic, and neuroimaging data.
  • Verify study participant information and collect data and results of testing.
  • Perform accurate and timely data analysis, report results and findings and respond to sponsor queries. Set up, format and enter data into spreadsheets to analyze information and create reports.
  • Enter data into research databases, systems and applications for ongoing studies. Conduct somatosensory and pain-related quantitative sensory testing. 1
  • Assist researchers develop, maintain and complete study data collection forms and source documents.
  • Assist staff writing and editing clinical research protocols and informed consent forms (ICFs) based upon templates. Review draft protocols, case report forms, and manuals of operations for clarity, and completeness.
  • Work with staff on the design, development and preparation of documents such as spreadsheets, letters, rosters, agendas, presentations and meeting minutes/summaries.
  • Assist researchers design patient Case Report Forms (CRFs).
  • Work with investigators from multiple NIH institutes and center to design sensory, autonomic, and imaging testing procedures to best characterize pain conditions associated with individual conditions, treatments, and diseases. 4
  • Retrieve research related information from medical records, hospital information system and laboratory information system and create spreadsheets and other reports for use in study analysis.
  • Conduct pain-related neuroimaging studies of patients and healthy volunteers. 3
  • Assist staff writing progress reports and contributions to peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. Conduct autonomic testing of patients and healthy volunteers. 2
  • Assist researchers develop and maintain current and new research protocols. Participate in the writing of clinical protocols to study pain mechanisms. 5
  • Participate in the writing of scientific papers.
  • Work products and documents related to conducting somatosensory and pain-related quantitative sensory testing; autonomic testing of patients and healthy volunteers; pain related.
  • Neuroimaging studies of patients and healthy volunteers. - Weekly
  • Attend recurring and ad hoc PRC and NCCIH clinical research meetings. - Weekly
  • Work products and documents related to collaborating on designing sensory, autonomic, and imaging testing procedures to best characterize pain conditions associated with individual conditions, treatments, and diseases. - Weekly
  • Work products and documents related to participating in the writing of clinical protocols to study pain mechanisms; writing of scientific papers; performing data analysis of sensory, autonomic, and neuroimaging data. - Weekly
  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Weekly
  • Clean Equipment - Ad-Hoc
  • Run Validation - Ad-Hoc
  • Inspect Equipment - Ad-Hoc

Basic Qualifications:

  • A masters degree in a related field (e.g., neuroscience, psychology, biology) is preferred, but a minimum of a bachelors degree and 1-3 years experience is required.
  • The candidate who is selected should expect a long-term commitment to the position.
  • Skilled in MS Office Suite.
  • Required experience in analytical and statistical software program(s), e.g., SPSS, R, SPM, AFNI, and MATLAB.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing protocols and scientific manuscripts.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analyses in relevant area, e.g., neuroimaging, behavioral, psychophysical, autonomic, clinical data.
  • Previous experience performing at least one of the following techniques: MRI/fMRI, fNIRS, EEG, PET, TMS, psychophysical or autonomic testing.
  • Experience with data management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in clinical research or a related field, direct patient contact preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
