Position Overview:
The Sergeant performs patrol and emergency functions, provides supervision of the public safety staff and performs all assigned duties to provide for a safe campus environment and to support the university mission.
Essential Responsibilities:
* Assists other public safety on duty by supervising daily work details, advising, counseling, training and relaying information from the Chief's office.
* Is a member of the command staff- A team approach to collaborative management.
* Shall be responsible for the daily management of the department of public safety in the absence of higher-ranked public safety staff.
* Maintains security of all campus buildings, property, students, and visitors by routinely patrolling and surveying assigned areas.
* Maintains direct communication with the Chief about all staff and community concerns.
* Maintains a positive working relationship with resident life staff ensuring a benefit to the campus community.
* Responds to calls for assistance from the Siena Heights community including those from resident life staff and the Campus Village Apartments as needed.
* Ensures that all monthly fire safety checks are complete and accurate as per procedure.
* Accurately completes all reports, logs, and documentation as required.
* Assists in ensuring that all patrol and special event scheduling of staff is completed appropriately.
* Assumes control of all incidents requiring DPS intervention or assistance, maintaining contact with DPS staff and outside emergency assistance as necessary. Directs and maintains communications with on and off-campus administrative authorities during emergent situations, calling-in additional staff and completing reporting requirements as per procedure.
* Responsible for AED checks and medical supply inventory.
* Responsible for public safety inventory control.
* Attends judicial review boards and court trials as assigned by the Chief.
* Assists with the training of new staff members including assisting with training week for student employees.
* Shall have the final determination in towing a vehicle from SHU property in the absence of higher ranked DPS staff.
* Shall assist the Chief in policy and procedure enforcement, issuing verbal and/ or written warnings and shall advise the Chief of such.
* Completing all other departmental duties assigned by the Chief.
Qualifications, Experience, Abilities and Skills Required:
Education/Certification:
* High school graduate or equivalent. Two years of post-secondary education and/or prior management or supervisory experience preferred.
Professional Experience:
* Experience in law enforcement, security, or related field is desired.
* Must be knowledgeable about university and public safety and procedures, able to respond to changing priorities and able to direct the work of others.
Skills and Abilities:
* Must possess the ability to communicate with others, verbally and in writing.
* Must have the ability to remain calm and take control during emergent situations or under stressful conditions, especially when others are agitated or emotional.
* Must be first aid, AED, CPR certified or be willing to obtain certification upon hire.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
* Must possess the ability to speak clearly via telephone, radio, and in person.
* Must have clear vision in a verity of light settings.
* Must possess the manual dexterity to check locks, doors, windows, etc.
* Must have the capacity to move quickly, if necessary, from place to place, inside and outside of buildings, during day or night, under a variety of weather conditions.
* Must be available to work a variety of hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
* Must possess the manual dexterity to direct traffic in a variety of weather conditions.
