The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is currently accepting online applications for a Service Technician in the Fleet Management department. This position is second shift, 2:30pm to 10:30pm. The employee performs intermediate skilled mechanical work related to repair and servicing of a large variety of automotive type equipment; does related work as required. Work of this class involves repair and maintenance work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, tractors, air compressors and all types gasoline and diesel driven equipment. Work assignments are received either in writing or verbally; does require diagnosing mechanical failure and making necessary repairs. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the maintenance and repair on a wide variety of automobiles, trucks, tractors and construction type equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use of service tools and diagnostic equipment such as drill press, grinders, brake lathes, laptop computer, scanner, welding equipment and all tools related to the repair and maintenance of various types of equipment; thorough knowledge in safety precautions and liabilities related to the repair and maintenance of various types of equipment; ability to do suspension repairs. Ability to diagnose, repair, and trouble shoot electrical systems, ability and skill to diagnose gasoline/diesel engines, automatic transmission /standard transmission and differentials on variety of equipment. Ability to detect by inspection any worn, missing, broken, mismatched or wrongly adjusted parts. Ability to keep records of repairs, parts and servicing of various types of equipment, ability to work from drawings, sketches and wiring schematics, ability to use and interpret service and repair manuals for different types of equipment. Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately. Dexterity to operate machinery.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Completion of high school or GED and considerable experience at the journeyman level as a line technician, supplemented by approved vocational school training in the automotive technology field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Pre-employment physical, drug screening and background check required.
