Summary:
Performs mechanical servicing connected with the repair and general maintenance of school buses and other automotive power equipment. Diagnoses problems and makes repairs, replaces worn parts for engines, ignition and electrical, fuel-air-exhaust, cooling, power train, steering and braking, and passenger safety systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Assists Mechanics in major repair and maintenance of school buses and other automotive equipment including vans, cars, tractors, trucks, power mowers, and forklifts.
* Performs servicing and tune-up work such as common brake system overhaul, engine tune-up, lubrication, fluids, and oil and filter changes. Repairs and changes tires.
* Inspects engines, pans, seals, belts, mounts and struts for leaks and other abnormalities. Repairs worn and damaged parts. Checks or tests for proper tightening of connections.
* Assists with diagnoses and repair of non-starting, hard starting and misfiring engines, spark plug knock, power loss, and poor gasoline mileage with vehicles with or without distributors as part of their ignition system.
* Services and replaces batteries, cables, terminals, alternators, pulleys, belts and wiring.
* Troubleshoots braking problems by checking for brake pad adjustment, shoe wear, oil/grease buildup on brake shoes and/or drums, slack adjuster mechanisms, leaks in system, clogged lines, etc. Replaces brakes, master cylinders, and ABS components.
* May test-drive buses and other rolling stock after repairs and prior to returning to use. Inspects first aid kits and fire safety equipment.
* Documents work orders, describing diagnostics, repairs made, and labor, parts, and other materials used in connection with repairs.
* Installs and repairs hardware for after-market technology devices on school buses.
* Maintains and repairs child safety systems on school buses.
* Drives all school bus types and other District vehicles to transport students as needed.
* Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Qualifications:
* Knowledge and Skills:
* The position of Service Technician requires basic knowledge of the methods school bus manufacturers use for diagnostics. Requires basic knowledge of the standard practices, techniques and tools used in servicing, repairing, and maintaining school bus and automotive equipment. This includes and is not limited to engines, power transmission, vehicle handling, braking, cooling and emission control, and electrical and fuel systems. Requires basic knowledge digital diagnostic tools. Requires basic knowledge of the methods used in preventive maintenance for automotive equipment. Requires basic knowledge of work hazards, safe work practices, and the procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous materials. Requires knowledge of service documentation requirements and practices and sufficient skill to write clear reports of service activity. Requires sufficient math skill to read, record, and compute measurements, ratios, and volumes. Requires sufficient human relations skill to convey information to work team members.
Abilities:
* Requires the ability to perform basic gasoline and diesel engine vehicle servicing and repairs, using appropriate diagnostic testing tools, techniques, and access service and repair information from manufacturers and the internet. Requires the ability to safely and skillfully operate power and hand tools common to the trade of automotive repair. Requires the ability to read technical manuals and schematics. Requires the ability to work independently from customer comments, work orders, and other Mechanics' instructions. Requires the ability to estimate the time involved for work assignments and secure necessary tools and materials to complete assignments. Requires the ability to perform a variety of servicing and repair activities simultaneously. Must be able to keep accurate records and observe general safety procedures. Must be able to obtain a class B driver's license with Passenger Endorsement and School Bus Endorsement, along with a Special Driver Certificate for a school bus, and learn how to safely operate a bus and other District vehicles.
Education and Experience:
* High School diploma or GED.
* Two years of experience in the servicing and repair of vehicles.
* Alternatively, the position may require a post-secondary certificate/degree in an automotive technology or one or more ASE certificates.
Licenses and Certificates:
* A valid driver's license and a Class B license with Passenger Endorsement and School Bus Endorsement, along with a Special Driver Certificate for a school bus within the probationary period.
Additional Requirement:
* Must pass an approved pre-placement medical assessment.
