The Service Worker, Streets performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.The ideal candidate for the role will have one year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.Salary and Hiring Bonus:This position is a Grade 310 with an annual salary between $42,714 - $64,071.The City of Glendale is offering a$1,000 HIRING BONUSforService Worker-StreetsBonus to be paid as follows: $500 after 30 days of employment, $500 after 6 months of employment. You must be an active employee at the time the hiring bonus is scheduled to be paid to receive the bonus.   • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).
Retirement:
  • This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
  • Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%.
Essential Functions
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work, such as repairing streets, laying concrete, carpentry, painting, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
  • Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including brush tractors, dump trucks, mowing and sweeping equipment, trucks, truck with trailers, and Fire vehicles.
  • May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
  • Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
  • Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, direction of traffic, hazardous materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed; answers questions from citizens.
  • Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
  • Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
  • Operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment may operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Streets:
  • Constructs new streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, bus pads, and handicap ramps.
  • Maintains and repairs streets, parking lots, curbs, gutters and sidewalks, and handicap ramps.
  • Operates trucks and equipment used in oil and crack sealing, slurry sealing, pothole patching and street and curb cutting, such as concrete saws, tampers, jack hammers, heaters and mixers.
  • Sets forms, and performs some concrete work.
  • May install chain link fences, construct block walls, meter and traffic bases, and stems and footings.
  • Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success FactorsOne year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Knowledge of:
    • Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
    • Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
    • Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
    • Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
    • Street layouts and routes
    Ability to:
    • Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
    • Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
    • Understand and follow safe working practices
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
    • Deal courteously with the public
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens
    • Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment
    • Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibilityUnderstand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
    • Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers
    • Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices.
    • Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements.
    • Coordinate hand and eye movements
    • Operate city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
    Special Requirements:
    • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
    • Valid Arizona class D driver license.
    • Valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements is required for some positions and some positions require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months.
    • Work Zone Certification is required for some positions.
    • Position in the Streets division require a Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement within 6 months of hire.
    • All employees are subject to call back, stand-by duty and evening, weekend and rotating shifts.

Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may enter, exit, and operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
