Job TitleShelter TechnicianDepartmentCommunity DevelopmentPosting DateDecember 3, 2024Closing Date for Resumes/ApplicationsOpen Until FilledSalary$53,748.01- $75,247.20Comprehensive, Cost Effective Benefits Package:Medical, Dental, Voluntary Vision, Life and Disability Insurance; FSA; HSA; Retirement and Deferred Compensation programs; Paid Vacation; Paid Holidays; Employee Assistance Programs and Educational Benefits.Exempt/Non-exemptNon - ExemptStatusFull timeThe City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is currently recruiting for the position of full-time Shelter Technician for the St. Charles Animal Shelter within the St. Charles Community Development Department.The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the day-to-day care and treatment of the animals that are brought to the shelter and will perform duties pertaining to administrative tasks, social media and marketing, public outreach, kennel maintenance, maintaining a disease free environment for animals at the facility, and training and coordination of shelter volunteers. This position will interact with the public, fellow staff, community service, and volunteers professionally and with exceptional customer service. This position is full-time.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.Performs clerical and general office work related to day-to-day operation of the animal shelter.Cares for and feeds animals housed at the animal shelter.Cleans kennels inside and out, daily or more frequently when necessary.Observes animals in custody for indications of disease.Provides maintenance, general cleaning and upkeep for the animal shelter and equipment.Helps maintain an inventory of food and supplies for reorder.Helps to maintain records and files of the animal shelter.Helps with impounding stray/owned animals brought into the shelter.Checks all animals for microchip identification or other type of ID.Checks all animals against the lost and found records to find the rightful owner.Assists the public with redemptions, impoundments and adoptions of animals from the shelter.Assist, if necessary, with medical procedures, including spade and neutering, as well as euthanasia.Administers medical services including taking animal vital signs; collecting samples, administering medications, drugs, and vaccines; bandaging and wrapping wounds.Transport animals to and from the veterinarian.Coordinates and trains volunteers.Assists with public outreach, marketing, and social media communication.Other duties as assigned.Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job FunctionsHigh School diploma or GED equivalent.Two or more years of experience in the care and handling of animals, preferably including wild, aggressive, and feral animals.Knowledge of basic species and breed identification of a variety of domestic and common wild animals.Knowledge of symptoms and behavior associated with common animal diseases.Knowledge of behavior and handling of common domestic and wild animals.Knowledge of methods and equipment used in the care and handling of common domestic and wild animals.Environmental AdaptabilityAbility to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions, and occasionally unsafe and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, irate individuals, animals, noise, wetness, dust, and or disease, may cause some discomfort and where there is risk of minor injury.Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and cleaning chemicals; Potential for exposure to dangerous and fractious animals; Potential exposure to high noise levels when in the kennel area or when around animals; Potential for animal bites and scratches while handling animals.Language Ability and Interpersonal CommunicationAbility to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data, as well as assemble, copy and record information.Mathematical AbilityAbility to add, subtract, multiply and divide, calculate percentages, fractions and decimals.Judgment and Situational Reasoning AbilityAbility to use functional reasoning in performing semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action.Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties subject to frequent change.Provide excellent customer service, including responding to complaints and inquiries from the public in a calm, professional and courteous manner.Physical RequirementsAbility to operate a variety of office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, and photocopier.Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as rapid keyboard use.Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.How to Apply:Online employment applications can be accessed on our City Website: City of Saint Charles is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-Verify#J-18808-Ljbffr
