Salary: $31.66 Hourly Location : Caledonia, MN Job Type: Casual/Temporary/Seasonal Job Number: 2024-00068 Department: County Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 11/07/2024 Description Houston County is accepting applications for temporary/casual Sheriff's Deputy positions to fill road patrol shifts. Must be available to work on an as-needed basis, limited to 67 days per calendar year. Current wage rate: $31.66/hr., no benefits. Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain a MN Peace Officer License by the date of hire. Please include documentation of your POST License/Eligibility with your application. Under the direction of the Sheriff, a Houston County Deputy Sheriff reports directly to the Chief Deputy. A Deputy enforces State and Local laws, apprehends criminals, prevents crimes, protects property, and serves civil processes. Deputies will evaluate a wide variety of critical situations and are expected to determine the best course of action while having the interest of public safety in mind. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Many times, the decisions will need to be made in a split second prior to consulting the decision with a supervisor. Deputies are exposed to dealing with unwilling, unruly, and non-compliant individuals and groups. Deputies are expected to analyze the situation, determine the need for the use of force which could ultimately lead to the use of deadly force, initiating or terminating motor vehicle pursuits, and determining the difference between criminal complaints and civil complaints. ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. General Patrol and Civil Process Patrol State, County Highways, Township Roads, and City Streets within Houston County. Deputies will typically conduct these patrols in an emergency vehicle, to preserve law and order. Deputies need to be familiar with all streets and roads within Houston County and have a general knowledge of the geography and road structure of the neighboring counties. Deputies enforce Minnesota Traffic and Criminal Code in an ongoing effort to preserve the peace and public trust. General patrol often times yield criminal activity ranging from minor driving offenses to DWI arrests, drug and alcohol offenses, assaults, disorderly conduct, and arson. Deputies are usually patrolling alone and are tasked with handling these offenses on their own until assistance arrives. While on General Patrol, Deputies deliver and execute civil processes, ranging from serving court orders, subpoenas, eviction processes, and warrants. Deputies conduct the initial investigations on calls for service that often will require additional follow up such as burglaries, thefts, robberies and certain violent crimes. The deputy will coordinate with the agency general investigator for assistance when needed. 40%2. Responding to Emergency and Non-Emergency Calls for Service Deputies respond to a wide variety of serious crimes and motor vehicle crashes. (Examples of these calls for service are Damage to Property Complaints, Assaults, Domestic Situations, Driving Complaints, Suspicious Person Complaints, etc.) Deputies must effectively prioritize calls for service and give direction to other responding emergency service personnel. Deputies ensure the preservation of all evidence at crime scenes. This preservation includes collecting evidence, documenting the scene utilizing photographs and/or video equipment, and collecting statements from individuals involved. (Many times Deputies will be responding to calls for service alone. Deputies are expected to be able to determine the need for additional resources, if that be more law enforcement, investigators, fire services, utility services, or ambulance services.) 40%3. Report Writing and Case Management Houston County Deputy Sheriffs must accurately document cases by preparing written reports in accordance with agency policy. These reports are presented to prosecutors, judges, probation officers, human services, and others for review of the case. Deputies will utilize handwritten forms, computers, and audio/visual recording equipment to accurately document their observations and actions. Deputies are expected to take responsibility of their reports and ensure these are completed in a timely fashion and forwarded to the appropriate supervisor for review. If a report needs to be forwarded to another law enforcement agency or other government agency, the deputy is expected to ensure this task is completed timely. 15%4. Specially Assigned Duties, Tasks, and Trainings
  • Patrol Houston County waterways utilizing patrol and rescue boats
  • Perform court security functions as requested
  • Complete mandatory trainings per the MN Post Board (Use of Force, Emergency Vehicle Operation Course, HAZMAT, Defensive Tactics, etc.)
  • Attend other specialized trainings related to the duties of a deputy sheriff

  • Associate degree or a two year technical certificate in Law Enforcement, or Criminal Justice
  • Valid peace officers license issued by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, (POST Board)
  • Valid driver's license and have a clean driving record
Pre-Employment Required Essential Experience
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply ordinances and statutes
  • Ability to safely handle and utilize a rifle, handgun, and other weapons as needed
