The Role

The Shift Lead is vital in working collaboratively with our team, serving as their invaluable right-hand support. This position is defined by an unyielding dedication to learning, personal development, and ongoing enhancement, all while collaborating closely with the team to achieve shared objectives.

As a Shift Lead, you are the safety net, ready to step in when shifts need coverage at our cafes. You also provide indispensable support to Assistant Shift Managers in various capacities, including handling, receiving deliveries, facilitating orders, overseeing inventory, assisting in schedule development, and taking care of essential administrative tasks. You spend most of your time in the cafes, acting as an additional pair of observant eyes and attentive ears for the Assistant Shift Managers.

Your primary objective as a Shift Lead is to assist Assistant Shift Managers and Cafe Managers in the day-to-day operations and overall cafe management. This role serves as a stepping stone towards becoming an Assistant Shift Manager, offering a valuable opportunity to learn the art of active listening, immerse yourself in our unique culture, and refine your skills as a proactive problem solver.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Must be flexible and available to work full-time with open shifts.
  • Must be available to work on weekends.
  • Finds coverage or covers shifts when needed and can assist with the basic care and troubleshooting of coffee equipment.
  • Make personal and team growth a top priority in a dynamic, enjoyable work environment.
  • Oversees seamless cafe operations, fostering teamwork among baristas and ensuring customer satisfaction and requirements are consistently addressed.
  • Assist in coordinating Cafe needs, and organizing supplies or inventory.
  • Support Assistant Shift Managers in daily operations and team management.
  • Maintains and ensures proper tracking of waste management protocols.
  • Exemplifies service excellence and advises on guest recovery practices.
  • You won't be responsible for employee terminations but rather for coaching, teaching, training, and guiding behaviors in alignment with Mothership values.
  • You will be supervised by the Management Team and serve as a communication link between team members and the management team.
  • Ensures all cafes (inside and out) are clean and tidy.
  • Manage compliance with food and beverage policies as directed by the local health department.

  • You can adapt to changing circumstances and are comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • Supports other administrative-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Working as a Barista or Waiter/Waitress is a plus.
  • Training in food preparation, skills, and customer service procedures is a plus.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times. Must be available to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
