DescriptionGREENE COUNTY PRISONSHIFT LIEUTENANT JOB DESCRIPTIONTITLE:Shift Lieutenant-Regular Full-Time DOT Code #372.667-018 SOC Code #33-3012.00 DEPARTMENT: Law & Order LOCATION: Greene County Prison SALARY: Pay Grade 8 $19.27 - $20.51/hourly Management SHIFTS:12 Hour Shifts/24 Hour Day/7 Days Week BENEFITS:Full County Benefits after 90 days probation OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:Oversee and manage the care, custody and control of inmates at the Greene County Prison. Worker is required to oversee and direct the inmates from initial incarceration through weekend presentation and/or work release situations. Oversight of activities includes head counts, monitoring of visitation, meal service, tray and utensil collection, medication distribution, unclothed searches, and mail allocation. Tasks rotate through areas that include Housing Units, Tower (yard time) and Control. Worker must be able to perform the essential functions of the position in each work area.In addition, all special needs prisoners are monitored and attended to by a correction officer. As necessary, all corrections staff are required to administer first aid or react to emergency situation that could exceed a Medium strength rating as defined by the United States Department of Labor.Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Oversee all operations within the Prison on a daily basis.
  • Directly supervise Corrections Officers, ensuring proper procedures and policies are being followed.
  • Direct and follow up with staff to complete tasks as needed
  • Conduct rounds of the facility, inspecting and ensuring the safety and security of staff, visitors, and inmates.
  • Determine new commitments housing status and classification.
  • Operate and oversee the prison monitoring system.
  • Approve acceptance of new commitments and the release of inmates, reviewing of all necessary documents for legality to include the Central Booking Department and the commitments into the Prison system.
  • Review all documentation that is completed during booking of a new commitment ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Make recommendations to the Warden regarding, hiring, firing, disciplinary, and grievance issues of Corrections Officers.
  • Assist in the training and orientation of new Corrections Officers.
  • Maintain a daily log of the operations of the Prison.
  • Inspect incoming and outgoing mail checking for contraband and authorized correspondence.
  • Arrange medical or counseling attention of inmates as needed.
  • Maintain accounting records of inmates' personal funds.
  • Assure the maintenance and upkeep of the prison and coordinate any fixes that need to be made.
  • Responsible for ensuring the required staffing coverage's, calling for coverage if necessary.
  • Review incident reports and misconducts, checking for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Responsible for holding hearings on internal inmate misconducts and imposing sanctions.
  • Review and respond to inmate requests, complaints and formal grievances conducting investigations if necessary.
  • Interact frequently with police agencies, courts, government offices, County officials, and the general public.
  • Act on behalf of the Warden and/or Deputy Warden in their absence.
  • Supplemental Tasks:
  • Supervise medication distribution as necessary.
  • Assists with meal distribution, as necessary.
  • Ensures staff properly collects and counts utensils, trays, etc. during meal times.
  • Observes and validates linen and prisoner uniform exchanges two items per week.
  • Ensures special management inmates are showered on their scheduled days.
  • Issues and supervises cleaning tasks to staff.
  • Observes, maintains and disseminates information from control room.
  • Attends training, as assigned, to maintain knowledge of best practices and procedures.
  • Maintains firearm(s) certification(s).

    Vocational Criteria:
    • Basic computer/Keyboarding skills required

    • Criminal history clearance
    • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license
    • Successful completion of Department of Corrections (DOC) basic training after 24 months
    • Experience with first aid and/or CPR preferred
    • Annual Fit for Duty Examination
    Standard Vocational Preparation Level (SVP):
    • 4 (Over 3 months and up to 6 months)

  • Each shift is staffed with from three (3) to five (5) Correction Officers (CO) and a Shift Commander.
