QUALIFICATIONS
  • Required: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Connecticut.
  • Required: Minimum of 5 years nursing experience and 3 years of consistent charge nurse or equivilent nurse leadership experience demonstrating competence in the clinical area.
  • Required: Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Required: Bachelor degree in Nursing (or current matriculation into program)
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Preferred: Valid/current BLS Healthcare Provider or equivalent.
JOB SUMMARY
  • The Shift Manager is designated as a leader for the clinical units for a designated time frame. He/she has responsibility and accountability for all patient care activities, personnel management, staffing coordination, and operational management. He/she assures that educational needs of assigned staff are supported.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Job requires standing frequently for periods of up to 90 minutes.
  • Job requires reaching, stretching, bending, and lifting to assist staff with patient care (ability to push/pull up to 60 pounds when assisting with patient). Position occasionally requires lifting patients and carrying items up to and over 75 pounds.
  • Job involves carrying of documents, books, chairs and small equipment (i.e. audiovisual).
  • Fine manipulation is required related to writing, graphing or computer usage and selected clinical skills.
  • May occasionally sit at desk functions or at committee up to but usually no greater than 120 minutes.
COGNITIVE DEMANDS
  • Job requires independent problem identification. Abstract reasoning, adaptability to foreign environments and information, and quick decision-making is required. A high degree of selective attention, discernment, perception and concentration is necessary.
  • Job requires a high degree of writing proficiency including attention to detail, adherence to all elements of style and ability to express self clearly. A working knowledge of and familiarity with medical terms and definitions is required.
  • Job requires a high level of communication skill including expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiations, active listening and an ability to dialogue with multiple parities.
  • Job requires reading and auditory comprehension of abstractions and an ability to make inferences. A working knowledge/familiarity with professional/medical documentation is necessary.
WORK DEMANDS
  • Job requires working primarily indoors, only occasional need to be outdoors. Job requires working mainly around and with others. Schedule fluctuation is occasional and, at times, unpredictable. Job requires emergency response. Job involves possible exposure and handling of the following; bloodborne and/or airborne pathogens, body fluids, infections and contagious diseases, latex, antineoplastic and other hazardous drugs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Adheres to established clinical standards for Nursing.
  • Acts as a resource to all staff regarding patient care.
  • Assesses and evaluates patient care needs in collaboration with treatment team and physicians on assigned shift and allocates resources as needed.
  • May assume a clinical assignment as needed.
  • Interacts effectively with individuals with an awareness of specific disabilities, age, developmental levels and cultural backgrounds.
  • Facilitates planning and delivery of patient care.
  • Assures that there is adequate staffing and allocates resources as needed.
  • Attends and participates in relevant meetings/committees/task forces.
  • Assures compliance to regulatory process.
  • Promotes continuity of operations across all shifts.
  • Communicates status of operations and other relevant issues to appropriated management team members.
  • Participates in and supports new process changes.
  • Handles patient/family satisfaction issues.
  • Assures cost effective operations including well-controlled use of overtime, supplies, and resources.
  • Handles employee health issues.
  • Provides quality customer service considering age, cultural, ethnic, religious, and language needs of others.
  • Handles off shift admission, discharge, and transfer functions.
  • Monitors and manages performance issues of staff.
  • Completes performance evaluation on time of assigned staff including setting and monitoring of appropriate goals.
  • Monitors LOA/Attendance of staff per standards.
