Job Description:

Daybreak, an emergency shelter for runaway and homeless youth is looking for Residential Specialists. The Residential Specialist will respond to Miami Valley's only 24-hour crisis hotline and youth who walk into the emergency youth shelter. This unique youth shelter includes outreach, prevention, transitional housing, life-skills education, and other follow-up services for runaway, throwaway, and homeless youth. This position assumes an advocacy and leadership role which includes engaging the clients, providing daily face-to-face crisis intervention and stabilization services. This role will complete intake interviews and termination forms for youth entering and exiting the shelter during the shift. The Residential Specialist will provide guidance and coaching for youth as assigned including information, referral, outreach, advocacy, and linkage with educational, employment, financial, housing, counseling, medical and other social resources in the community. They will supervise, assist, and participate with residents in scheduled activities (i.e., groups, chores). Timely documentation is required of all paperwork for the client's record and agency productivity goals as established for the program according to agency protocols, standards, and expectations.

RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST (FT) SUMMARY:

Supervises the general activities of residents within Daybreak. Maintains the cleanliness of the Daybreak shelter and provides support and guidance for Daybreak residents by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Responds to youth who walk into the shelter and to youth and adults who call on the hotline telephone.

Engage clients, providing daily face-to-face crisis intervention and stabilization services, according to agency's productivity standards. Document notes in CareLogic before the end of the shift.

Completes Intake Interview and termination forms for youth entering and exiting the shelter during shift. Document shift events in daily log, prepares and maintains accurate records, as needed, UR and other forms that may be required in CareLogic or for PQI as assigned and as required. Ensures proper communication between shifts, Shelter staff and on-call personnel by phone or email when necessary.

Provide timely documentation, of all paperwork for the client's record per OhioMHAS standards and meets productivity goals as established for the program an individually, according to agency protocols, standards, and expectations. Keep track of individual productivity for supervisory purposes.

Coordinates with the Shelter staff on all activities, such as contact with parents and other agencies.

Provides guidance and coaching for youth as assigned including information, referral, outreach, advocacy, and linkage with educational, employment, financial, housing, counseling, medical and other social resources in the community.

Performs CareLogic, HMIS and other data management systems support duties as needed and as assigned.

Maintains order and cleanliness of the house on a daily schedule and, if on night shift, ensures that house is secure and free of unauthorized persons.

Supervises, assists, and participates with residents in scheduled activities (i.e., groups, chores).

Apply CPI, TIC, CI and other trainings knowledge and techniques and maintains limits using natural and logical consequences as described in the Shelter Procedures Manual.

Utilizes the therapeutic milieu model to assist in managing the behaviors of self and youth.

Ensure that Crisis Intervention, Red Cross, CPI and CPR training are all up to date annually.

Ensures all duties set by agency's guidelines and programs policies and procedures are completed on time and as assigned.

Meets weekly and/or as assigned with Supervisor.

Notifies supervisors of potential or real emergencies including criminal activities, high risk behavior, mental health emergencies, health emergencies or other activities that impact safety, security, and public relations, where applicable.

Models professional behavior and actively contributes in a positive manner and demonstrates constructive positive problem-solving strategies and openness to others' opinions.

Refrains from engaging in dual-relationships or any other ethical boundary with clients to ensure and protect client's rights and consults with supervisor when there might be a risk of these situations, where applicable.

Refrains from engaging in negative or counterproductive behaviors and attitudes and strives to keep the well-being of co-workers and clients at the forefront.

Demonstrates appreciation, understanding and trust in the work of his/her colleagues.

Attends training/agency meetings, as scheduled. Responsible for completing all required trainings needed to comply with Daybreak policy. Maintains appropriate in-service training hours by attending conferences, workshops and training that are relevant to the job description and assignment tasks.

Adheres to and upholds agency's Mission, Core Values, attendance policies and procedures and maintain and contribute to positive customer relations-both internally and externally (clients, staff, vendors, donors.)

Attends All-Staff meetings each year

Drives Daybreak vehicles, when necessary, where applicable.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or general education degree (GED) plus 5 years' related experience or AA plus 2 years' related experience or BA.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

It is the policy of Daybreak to ensure that the facility is in compliance with all license requirements and that all employees are fit for duty. Background Check

Daybreak is required by State of Ohio law to perform a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting, of eligible applicants. In addition to the fingerprints, Daybreak requires the following additional background checks.

    • Office Inspector General (OIG)
    • Nurse Aide Registry
    • SAM
    • of Developmental Disabilities (DODD)
  • Motor Vehicle Report

Pre-employment Testing

The following pre-employment tests will be conducted at Daybreak's expense. Tests include:

  • A tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray (by a physician of Daybreak's choosing)
  • A urine drug screening (by a testing facility of Daybreak's choosing)

Should the pre-employment reviews indicate that the prospective employee does not meet the employment requirements, Daybreak has the option of either not hiring the person or postponing employment until the condition prohibiting employment has been removed.

If the background or pre-employment checks contain information that the applicant has committed, been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to any criminal offense, unless the charge was a minor misdemeanor not involving violence or a sexual offense at least 5 years old, or if the applicant refuses to submit fingerprints for a criminal background check, the conditional offer of employment will be withdrawn immediately.

Pursuant to SB 38 (child-serving agency), if it is determined that the applicant has committed one of the disqualifying events listed on the attached Ohio Revised Code Disqualifier sheet may prevent employment at Daybreak.
