Job Description:

The Linden Generation Station is an 800 MW natural gas/butane gas fired combined cycle co-generation plant located at Railroad and Chemical Avenues within the Phillips 66 refinery. The plant consists of five gas turbine generators exhausting into five triple pressure Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG's). The HRSG's are connected to a common steam header which supplies steam to three steam turbines and the adjacent refinery. General Summary As a Shift Supervisor, your role involves overseeing plant operators to ensure peak performance, safety, and efficiency. This includes administering lockout/tagout procedures, responding to alarms, and managing shutdown/startup processes. You'll supervise inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including the handling of hazardous materials. Additionally, your responsibilities encompass personnel management, including training, performance appraisal, conflict resolution, and maintaining a secure work environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Includes but are not limited to the following:

  • Operational Oversight: Direct and supervise plant operators to ensure the plant operates at peak performance while maintaining safety standards and efficiency
  • Lockout and Tagout: Administer all plant lockout and tagout procedures to guarantee the safety of personnel and equipment
  • Alarm Response: Respond promptly to alarms, taking corrective actions as necessary, and execute plant shutdown and startup procedures when required
  • Inspections and DPCC Compliance: Supervise routine inspections and assigned tasks, ensuring compliance with the Discharge, Prevention, Containment, and Countermeasures (DPCC) Plan. Ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials and waste by the operations staff
  • Safety and Environmental Compliance: Maintain a safe working environment, enforce good housekeeping practices, and adhere to all relevant environmental, health, and safety policies
  • Record Keeping: Maintain required logs and records in accordance with plant policies and regulations throughout the shift
  • Shutdown and Startup: Oversee and assist in shutdown and startup procedures during outages to minimize downtime
  • Training and Policy Implementation: Supervise training programs, implement new policies and procedures, and train staff accordingly. Attend Plant Management Meetings, participate in Safety Committee activities, and contribute to Plant Betterment Projects. Keep staff updated on relevant changes
  • Performance Feedback: Provide feedback on personnel performance to both staff and management
  • Reporting: Report all plant upset conditions to the Operations Manager. If such conditions occur during off-hours, contact the appropriate management personnel
  • Equipment Operation: Operate all plant equipment and systems within the scope of job responsibility
  • Off-Shift Responsibility: Be responsible for the entire plant's operations during off-shift hours
  • Customer Satisfaction: Oversee the Operations Department to ensure customer satisfaction and uphold the plant's reputation
  • Ad Hoc Duties: Perform other duties as directed and respond to reasonable requests from the customer's site management
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Direct Supervision: Oversee and directly supervise employees within the Operations Department
  • Compliance with Policies and Laws: Carry out supervisory responsibilities in strict adherence to the organization's policies and relevant laws and regulations
  • Employee Training: Provide guidance and training to employees as needed to ensure their professional development and competence
  • Work Planning: Plan, assign, and direct work tasks and responsibilities to optimize efficiency and productivity within the department
  • Performance Appraisal: Regularly assess and appraise employee performance, recognizing exceptional contributions and addressing areas for improvement
  • Employee Management: Effectively manage and implement rewards and disciplinary actions when necessary, in line with organizational policies
  • Conflict Resolution: Address complaints and promptly resolve problems that may arise within the department, fostering a collaborative and harmonious work environment
  • Safety Priority: Aggressively prioritize and maintain a safe working environment, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and practices

All NAES managers and supervisors ( Supervisors ) have a direct and important role in ensuring that all work is performed in a healthy and safe manner. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each supervisor's performance. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:
  • Conduct/Support Regular Safety Meetings (at least monthly)
  • Address Safety at all Group Meetings
  • Conduct Inspections and Observations: establish within the department a regular inspection of the work area and a safety observation process of work being performed.
  • Establish and lead these activities following any rules, requirements or guidance established in your business unit, group or division
  • Involve all NAES teammates in the activities
  • Analyze result, write work orders, train and educate to eliminate hazards, at-risk behavior and meet company regulatory requirements
  • Conduct Regular Observation Tours: Conduct no less than two safety observation tours of high risk activities e.g. confined space to verify that employees are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations
  • Regular and Frequent Contacts: conduct one-on-one contact sessions with workers to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations and coach safe behaviors, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment
  • Respond to Incidents: respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to injuries, incidents and near misses; write a report that explains what happened, identify the cause and recommend corrective action following any established business unit or division practice. Follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken
Working Relationships The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager depending on assigned duties. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule This position entails a 12-hour rotating Dupont schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. On call status will periodically be required. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings. Compensation Initial compensation will range from $57.69 to $69.71 per hour. Job Qualifications
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate Degree in a technical field desirable, but not required
  • A New Jersey Blue Seal 1-C Engineer license is required for this role, and possession of a NJ Red Seal 1-B Engineer license is preferred
  • Prior Experience as a Control Room Operator: Significant experience as a Control Room Operator at a power plant is essential, demonstrating a strong understanding of plant operations and safety protocols
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and supervise a team, ensuring efficient plant operations and adherence to safety procedures
  • Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of power plant systems, equipment, and processes, enabling effective troubleshooting and decision-making
  • Safety Awareness: A strong commitment to safety practices and the ability to enforce safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and hazard handling
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with environmental, health, and safety regulations, and a track record of ensuring plant compliance
  • Record Keeping: Proficiency in maintaining accurate logs and records in accordance with plant policies and regulations
  • Shutdown/Startup Expertise: Experience in overseeing and assisting with shutdown and startup procedures during plant outages to minimize downtime
  • Training and Policy Implementation: Capable of supervising training programs, implementing policies and procedures, and keeping staff updated on changes
  • Conflict Resolution: Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, fostering a collaborative and harmonious work environment among team members
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times
