Position Type: Support Staff (Instructional Assistants)/Instructional Assistant - Exceptional ChildrenDate Posted: 5/13/2024Location: Exceptional Children`s DepartmentEducational Interpreter/Language Facilitator Job description Wayne County Public Schools ?Facilitates communication between the student, his/her peers and the adults in the school environment at all times through the use of the students mode of communication (oral, signed exact English, pidgin, ASL etc) ? Utilizes planning time to prepare for demanding course material (ie the content and vocabulary requirements of the lessons) prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson to the student (This can include but is not limited to, previewing non captioned videos, prereading stories, vocabulary lists, teacher's notes) ? Tutors students who are deaf/hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher ? Provides feedback to teachers upon request ? Works with the classroom teacher(s) and teacher for the deaf/hard of hearing to ensure the best learning environment for the student. ? Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment ? May teach basic sign language to students and staff Activities/Duties that the interpreter should not be asked to perform as they may take away from student needs/prep time include but are not limited to: Hall duty Bus duty Lunch duty Supervision of students Running off papers for the teacher Running errands for the teacher If the interpreter's student is absent, the interpreter is to use the school day time to: ? Continue to prepare for upcoming lessons ? Use the time to continue to improve his/her signing vocabulary by the use of books, online web sites, and DVD's ? Assist the Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing with additional lesson prep materials. ? If another interpreter is out, and the student's absence is known in advance, the interpreter may be asked to cover for the absent interpreter, but only by the County Office. (Most of the time the county office will text/call/email me and ask me to make contact with the interpreter) If the interpreter is absent him/herself, then: ? Contact via email and/or text Sonja Emerson and classroom teacher ? Also notify your school as soon as possible ? Have a sub folder ready at your school with school schedule, your student's name, the name/schedule of the Teacher of the Deaf/HH and any class info that you are able to provide. (testing, review, story being read, etc) ? Please notify everyone as far in advance as possible. We all know emergencies happen, but if you are going to be out due to a previously scheduled appointment, please notify these folks as soon as you know about the appointment.
