Trainees are responsible for sufficiently completing all assigned formal training and on-the-Job Training (OJT) assignments. Trainees report to TriMet MOW Training staff during formal training classes. During OJT assignments, trainees work under close MOW supervision of a Shop Shift Supervisor and/or Signals Maintainer. As Trainees become proficient at tasks, they may be assigned to work more independently. Works in a variety of weather conditions on all shifts.This role requires being onsite a minimum of five (5) days per week.Ensure a commitment to safety through consistent and professional behaviors in performance of job requirements that demonstrate safety is a fundamental value that guides all aspects of our work. Perform related duties as required.Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers' experiences and of TriMet's product and service offerings.Essential Functions
  • Learn how to install, repair, and maintain various railroad signals and grade crossing protection equipment.
  • Complete 100% of assigned formal classes with a 75% or higher passing score.
  • Load and unload supplies and heavy equipment from trucks; dig holes and trenches for cable; paint signal equipment; climb and troubleshoot signal structures.
  • Work under the direction of Journeymen signal maintainers.
  • Be comfortable working from heights that require fall protection.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Pick up litter and other trash that may be in the immediate work environment.
  • Position Requirements A minimum of a High School Diploma/ G.E.D. and a combination of at least two (2) years of recent verifiable training and experience in electrical curriculum and/or high voltage electrical repair, which may include college, high school, military, or trade school mechanics courses and/or a regional occupational program is required; orAn Associates Degree in Electrical or a related field is required.Possession of current/valid or ability to obtain Class A or B CDL issued by Oregon or Washington with Passenger Endorsement and No Restrictions on Airbrakes; ability to pass a driving record check meeting TriMet driving record standards.Selection Criteria
  • Ability to effectively use and operate the tools, computerized diagnostic test equipment and field equipment required for the repair and maintenance of TriMet Light Rail signals Equipment.
  • Perform skilled work in connection with the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, operation, alteration and repair of the TriMet Light Rail signals System.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use personal computers and the Districts software programs for inventory and parts; completing work orders and reporting defects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work using principles of good customer service.
  • Must be available to work any day, Sunday through Saturday and Holidays as scheduled.
  • Must be available to work any one of three shifts - day, evening, or late; as scheduled and report to any MOW maintenance facility.
  • Must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform the following on a frequent or continual basis:
  • Stand, transport oneself from equipment location to equipment location in the Rail Right-of-Way and safely access the Right-of-Way.
  • Ability to sit while reviewing or preparing work orders and other paperwork, bend, squat, stoop, turn, climb, kneel, twist, perform simple and power grasping, push, pull, perform fine hand and finger manipulations, and safely lift, push, pull and carry heavy objects weighing up to fifty (50) lbs. or use appropriate lifting equipment and techniques for heavier items.
  • Ability to work in equipment that places Maintainer at various heights to maintain equipment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Signals Maintainer Training Program.
  • Must meet height and weight restrictions to work safely in confined spaces, utilize equipment, and wear necessary PPE, including fall restraint devices.
