Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 1 for the Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area. This position will provide guidance and training to assigned staff, direct and participate in the trapping and banding of waterfowl, assist with farming program planning while utilizing their supervisory, maintenance and problem-solving skills. Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area was acquired by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in the late 1940s. Union County State Fish & Wildlife Area is a haven for many diverse forms of wildlife. The most prominent throughout five months of the year are the phenomenal flocks of wintering Canada geese and other waterfowl. White-tailed deer, bald and golden eagles, and many other interesting types of wildlife that are commonly observed by visitors to the area. Essential Functions

* Serves as working supervisor

* Monitors and participates in the maintenance of the site grounds, building, vehicles, and equipment

* Directs and participates in the trapping and banding of waterfowl

* Prepares commodities reports on chemicals and seeds

* Participates and supervises the activities of subordinate staff engaged in inspecting site and satellite areas for safety hazards such as flooding, downed trees, malfunctioning maintenance equipment, damaged day use equipment and facilities

* Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably with the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

* Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration and one year's related functional supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

* One (1) year of working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and fiscal management

* Two (2) years of experience in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of the duties and responsibilities.

* One (1) year of experience assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees.

2. Valid driver's license.

3. Ability to obtain pesticide and or herbicide operator's license within 6 months employment.

4. Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.

5. Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.

6. Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

7. Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.

8. Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
