Job Description:
The Telluride Ski Patrol is an all-paid, professional ski patrol. Candidates must possess a current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) or Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) certification, or a Wilderness First Responder taught by Wilderness Medical Institutes, Wilder Medical Associates, or SOLO.Applicants must have a high level of fitness and ski (no snowboards) at an expert level. Experience in avalanche mitigation, beacon search/companion rescue and high angle rescue are a plus. New patrollers must commit to a full time seasonal schedule of four days per week. 1. MAJOR FUNCTION: The Patroller Trainee is responsible for assisting ski patrol department in all aspects of ski patrol, including but not limited to, first aid and evacuation of injured guests, trail checks, equipment maintenance, guest service, avalanche mitigation, risk management and incident investigation.2. DEPARTMENT FUNCTION: The primary function of the Department is to provide a safe and efficient rescue and evacuation of injured guests from the mountain. Additional duties of the Department include:
  • Reckless skier control and documentation
  • Avalanche risk mitigation
  • Risk mitigation for our guests and employees
  • Guest services
  • Crowd Control (Lifts, Trails and Special Events)
  • Enforcement of Mountain Regulations
  • Proper operations of communication equipment
  • Evacuation of Aerial Tramways if necessary
  • Detailed incident and investigative reports
  • Visual inspection of Aerial Tramways to report safety hazards and evidence of damage or wear.

  • Responsible for proper operation and care of communication equipment

  • Be familiar with Crisis Management Plans
  • Work closely with community Emergency Management Services
4. ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF WORK:
  • Patroller Trainee receives work direction from Ski Patrol Director, Assistant Ski Patrol Director and Ski Patrol Supervisors.
  • Work direction is provided verbally and in writing.
  • Work in progress is reviewed regularly and approved by Ski Patrol Director, Assistant Ski Patrol Director and Ski Patrol Supervisor.
  • Questions regarding the assigned task should be directed to the Ski Patrol Supervisor, Assistant Ski Patrol Director or Ski Patrol Director.
5. RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:
  • Patroller Trainee has decision making authority regarding daily maintenance of equipment.
  • Decisions involving departmental policy must be referred to the Ski Patrol Director.
6. REPORT PREPARATION:
  • Patroller Trainee is expected to prepare Daily Incident Reports as directed by Ski Patrol Management.
  • Patroller Trainee is expected to complete all training documentation as directed by Ski Patrol Management.
7. EQUIPMENT OPERATION:
  • Patroller Trainee time spent operating equipment daily - 30%
  • Patroller Trainee is required to take care of equipment but is not required to service or repair equipment.

9. WORK DIRECTION:Patroller Trainee has no responsibility for directing the work of other employees.10. SUPERVISION:Patroller Trainee has no supervisory responsibility.11. DIFFICULTY OF WORK: The most difficult part of being a Patroller Trainee is learning the basic aspects of ski patrolling. Learning trail names, sweep procedures, avalanche control routes, mountain logistics, gaining first aid experience and self-confidence are a challenge especially to someone who is experiencing the mountain for the first time. Physical demands of the job are significant.12. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITY:
  • Ability to interact and maintain positive relationships with guests, co-workers and management
  • Skiing ability that enables them to perform all aspects of their job in a safe manner
  • Ability to work in stressful environment
13. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) - College preferred.
  • Outdoor Emergency Care and CPR for the professional rescuer
  • One year previous experience in related field and/or combination of education and experience
Other requirements;
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be an expert level skier
  • Must be able to work for extended periods of time in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions
  • Must be able to function effectively at elevations of 10,000 feet or higher
  • Must be able to write legibly
  • Must be able to speak and understand English
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must be able to obtain a Colorado Type 1 Blasters Permit
14. LEARNING PERIOD: To perform this position competently, a new employee would need a minimum of 1 years of experience in a related field. Learning Mountain Logistics and how the departments work together takes the longest period to learn.15. CAREER PATH: A typical career path would involve a solid educational background combined with a background in outdoor recreation, outdoor education as well as involvement in team athletics. The most successful individuals would have a resume that displays a progression of experiences that displays the acquisitions of skills blending with evidence of leadership skills. Typical outstanding characteristics might be a background with Outward Bound, Scouting, National Outdoor Leadership experience, US military background, etc. The most successful candidates have relatively extensive work experience.16. WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Extreme outdoor winter conditions with frequent inclement weather and intense solar radiation
  • The most strenuous activity involves setting up the mountain with tower pads, ski packing, boot packing, building barriers, skiing patients down in toboggans for long distances, climbing lift towers, hiking in deep snow.
  • The hazards involved in the job are weather related. Deep snow, the chance of avalanches, the inherent risks of the sport of skiing. Daily wear and tear on your body incurred from extensive time on skis. Also hazards specific to their special team activity i.e. heights and weather conditions, sliding snow as well as explosives, rock fall, collisions with other skiers or machines and skiing in difficult snow conditions.
17. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Patroller Trainee is expected to have the ability to learn the overall operation of the mountain and to operate at a high level in stressful situations. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of how all aspects of the operation work together. The person in this position will provide superior service to our customers (internal and external) at all times and when interacting with the guest, will respond to all guests in a courteous efficient manner. Must be able to think and work as a team player coordinating our efforts towards a common goal. This employee supports company philosophy, goals, and objectives. Must be able to handle multi-tasking and bring these tasks to completion quickly, accurately and in a timely manner. This is an hourly position and is subject to overtime.Position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.The pay rate for this position starts at $18.50/hr.
