Job Description:

Small Claims Litigation Contract Attorney

Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has an exciting contract opportunity to help manage and litigate a large docket of cases, primarily in small claims courts throughout the tri-state area. We're seeking a litigation attorney to engage through our alternative-track attorney program, DWTSurge. This position will support a robust nationwide docket and seamlessly pivot from interacting with and negotiating with pro se or represented plaintiffs, working directly with the client and local counsel to conduct fact investigations and prepare litigation strategy, facilitating settlements when appropriate, and make court appearances on behalf of the client, depending on the geography and bar admissions of the selected individual.

Attorneys with three or more years of commercial litigation experience at mid-to-large law firms, who are seeking more flexibility in their current practice—while still performing meaningful litigation work—are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have experience and an active interest in prioritizing and managing a docket of 100+ active cases in various stages of dispute resolution, pre-litigation, and litigation.

The work can be performed remotely by an attorney who resides and is barred in one of the states listed below. Depending on the geography and bar admission(s) of the selected candidate, court appearances may be needed with advance notice, but most, if not all, of the other responsibilities may be performed remotely. Attorneys who are looking for remote work, and a more flexible schedule are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines, prioritize an assigned high-volume caseload of matters across the northeast, and provide dedicated ongoing service to a single, high-profile client. Candidates can expect to work closely with DWT attorneys and the client as part of a collaborative team. We are looking for someone that can seamlessly work with attorneys and staff to meet discrete litigation objectives under short deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3+ years of commercial litigation experience in a large law firm
  • Experience handling the various stages of litigation (including settlement) with minimal supervision
  • Experience interfacing directly with client contacts
  • Residency and active bar admission in one of these states: NJ, NY, and CT.
  • Availability to attend occasional court appearances as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, as this role requires regular communication with stakeholders, including but not limited to daily interaction with the client and negotiations with opposing counsel and pro se plaintiffs
  • Strong client service abilities, client relationship-building skills, and an ability to juggle the business priorities of different client teams
  • Candidates with excellent writing skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce high-quality work product with minimal supervision and direction are preferred and may assume additional responsibilities in this role
  • Demonstrated success in managing and working on a high volume of legal matters, with strong attention to competing deadlines and administrative requirements

The contract engagement is anticipated to be six-months in duration. There is a possibility of extension before or at the end of the initial six-month contract term, and potential for the opportunity to grow into a long-term engagement. We are looking for someone interested in an ongoing, flexible working relationship with DWT.

Please note that this is a temporary contract position managed by DWT's flexible attorney program, DWTSurge. Compensation will be paid on an hourly basis, commensurate with experience and skill level (see below). Due to the structure of the DWTSurge program, DWTSurge employees are not eligible for the firm's pro bono, DEI, and other activities or opportunities outside of the above stated scope of work. We are interested in candidates electing to pursue a more flexible way of providing continuous, high-value legal services to the firm and our clients. If you are interested in a more traditional law firm position, please check the DWT careers page for lateral opportunities.

SALARY RANGE:

The hourly range for this position in CA, MD, NY, WA, and WDC is $90 to $120 per/hour. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
