Position Title Small Farm Agent Associate Job Type Staff Position Information
The 1890 Extension Office invites resumes for an exempt, grant funded, full or part-time contractual position with the UMES Extension Program. The successful candidate will work with farmers and landowners predominantly in the Southern Maryland region. The successful candidate will report directly to the Small Farm Coordinator with the UMES Extension Program and who oversees the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers, Veterans, and Ranchers (OASDFVR) grant program in Maryland.
Responsibilities
* Expand and promote the IFARMS project initiative in Southern Maryland and surrounding area.
* identify limited resource and socially disadvantaged farmers and/or urban gardeners in assigned area and conduct assessment of their educational and programmatic needs.
* Provide educational materials and/or training to clients through individual visits and/or in a group setting;
* Update urban farmers/clients on USDA programs and services.
* Assist in developing and delivering educational programs and activities for farmers/clients that focus on but not limited to: farm/ranch production, marketing, financial, alternative agriculture and other issues that pertain to the overall management of their farm business.
* Perform other related duties as assigned
Classification 27-0000 Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, or a related field with substantial experience in agriculture.
* Good working knowledge of USDA farm programs particularly those offered through Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service.
* Experience working with limited-resource and socially disadvantaged farmers.
* Valid driver's license and a reliable automobile.
Preferred Qualifications
* General knowledge of Maryland Agriculture to include: major crops/enterprises, agricultural production practices, and farm business management practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
* Skill in use of computers to include Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability in writing reports, developing and delivering educational material to farmers.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate to and partner with organizations working with socially disadvantaged and/or underserved audiences.
* Ability to work flexible hours.
