Position Type: Student Support Services/Social WorkerDate Posted: 12/18/2023Location: Lansing Elementary School District 158Date Available: August 2024SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER Social Worker Job Description Job Summary: Provides school social work services that benefit students and families in Lansing School District 158 community; collaboratively delivers services for the purpose of developing the social-emotional, mental health, and behavioral skills needed by students to actively participate in school activities and to perform at their academic and social potential; collaborates with families, district personnel, and community service providers. Supervisor: Principal Qualifications: Illinois Professional Educator License with School Social Worker Endorsement Contract: Length of contract, salary, and benefits are established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Lansing School District 158 Board of Education and the Lansing Employee Association (LEA) Essential Functions: (specific roles and functions will vary depending on assignment) Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Support and Organization
- Provides crisis management services.
- Completes mandated special education functions (e.g., social developmental studies, reevaluations)
- Leads group and individual mental health sessions that utilize evidence-based practices for stressors related to grief, depression, chemical dependence, peer relationships, peer interaction, divorce, anger management, social-emotional development, or other factors that influence school success.
- Supports students and teachers through classroom-based/unit-based activities.
- Assumes responsibility for designing individual systems of support for students.
- Facilitates services to families.
- Serves as a liaison to students, families, and staff with outside agencies to help families access needed services.
- Maintains appropriate records.
Provide Training/Education
- Assumes responsibility for designing systems of support for students in the program (e.g., Peer Mediation, Peer Counseling, etc.).
- Facilitates and provides family training.
- Provides consultation and in-service to staff.
Facilitate Social Work Case Management
- Serves as liaisons between students, homes, schools, family service based, courts, protective services, doctors, and other contacts to help families access needed services.
- Communicates regularly with team members regarding individual student's strengths and needs.
- Communicates frequently with students' families.
- Connects student to available resources for future planning.
- Works collaboratively with outside agencies and personnel to assist with meeting student needs when appropriate.
- Initiates, facilitates, and monitors wraparound planning services when appropriate.
- Assists with designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating functional analyses and behavior plans.
Social Work Expectations

- Participates in restraint procedures when appropriate, unless contra indicated, and when properly trained according to Lansing 158 procedures (physically exempt employees are excluded)
- Utilizes evidence-based approaches to counsel individual, groups, families, or communities regarding issues affecting education, including mental health, social/emotional adjustment, parenting, disability awareness, and school success.
- Strives to maintain a working knowledge of curriculum and Illinois State Standards and the Illinois Learning Standards, specifically Social/Emotional Learning Standards
- Obtains and applies knowledge and strategies from the various disciplines which make up the school-based team.
- Participates in transition planning when appropriate.
- Acts as a resource for school-based team members regarding students' mental health, personal development, and/or social issues.
- Shares knowledge of resources and agencies that provide support services to a specialized population.
