DescriptionCOUNTY OF WARREN SOLID WASTE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:FLSA Status: Non-ExemptPerforms difficult skilled work in the regular operation of a variety of construction equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Solid Waste Manager; supervision is exercised over Transfer Station personnel.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:Operating motorized equipment including rubber tire loader; dolly truck; tractors, front end loaders; bush hogs, etc. in the operation of a Transfer Station; assists Solid Waste Manager in the supervision of operations and staff; serves as supervisor in absence of Solid Waste Manager.(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Drives and operates various vehicles and equipment such as rubber tire loader, back-hoe, tractors, etc.
  • Operates solid waste collection equipment in the loading of trucks with waste.
  • Maintains operational safety of vehicles and equipment; makes minor repairs to equipment; performs preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Operates grounds equipment in performance of facility maintenance.
  • Installs culvert pipe; patches roads with cold mix and asphalt
  • Cares for and maintains tools in proper working order.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of solid waste collection site.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating and servicing motorized vehicles and equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to proper equipment operation; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in the operation of motorized equipment.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
