Solid Waste Heavy Equipment Operator

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
An employee in this position will be, working alone or serving as lead worker with other assigned crew members, operates heavy equipment and performs related manual labor to collect, manage, transfer, and disposal of yard waste Work requires operation of a variety of heavy equipment types such as Class 8 truck, semi-trailer, excavator, bull dozer, front-end loader, Roll-off truck, Hook-lift truck, vacuum truck, chipper truck and grapple truck with boom. Work primarily consists of working at the Town's Transfer Facility but may involve skilled operation around obstacles such as cars, pedestrians and street obstacles, as well as maintaining crew member and public safety. The employee is subject to hazards associated with public works including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.
Work is performed under immediate supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:
* Operates assigned equipment in situations requiring skill and care such as electric lines, near overhanging branches, parked cars, heavy traffic and other situations; assures crew safety.
* Operates a boom truck to pick up large piles of waste.
* Operates excavator to manage yard waste pile and load material into semi-trailer.
* Operates bulldozer, backhoe, and front-end loader to manage yard waste pile.
* Drives class 8 semi-tractor and trailer.
* Drives a leaf removal truck.
* Operates a limb chipping machine to remove limbs and leaves from residential areas.
* Operates a Horizontal or Tub grinder.
* Operates snow plow, spreader when needed.
* Leads or works as a member of a crew to collect leaves, grass, limbs and other yard waste from residential neighborhoods; assists in training of new employees.
* Insures proper maintenance of the equipment.
* Drives items collected to landfill; may assist in emptying load at landfill or transfer station.
* Maintains vigilance in duties to assure safe operation of machinery and safe backing up and turning in tight situations.
* Assists in clean up after Town events.
* Keeps records of work activities.
* Uses a variety of smartphone applications in performance of duties to track completed work and work time; Uses Cityworks software application on computer and/or phone to complete work order activities.
* Performs general maintenance and cleaning of vehicles; greasing, inspects hydraulic hoses for leaks, puts on and removes blades and attached equipment; fabricates parts.
* Maintains transfer facility in accordance with regulations, maintains pile height within limits, manages material storage on site.
* Performs related tasks as required.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of three years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A commercial driver's license.

* Considerable knowledge and skill in the operation and care of variety of the heavy equipment used.
* Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
* Considerable knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to operations of motorized equipment.
* Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
* Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens.
* Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
* Ability to operate medium to heavy equipment safely on an established route.
