Overview

George Jackson Academy (GJA) is the only school of its kind in New York City: an independent, nonsectarian middle school for academically capable boys from low-income and low-wealth families. The school was created to engage boys from 6th to 8th grade, a time when young men are particularly vulnerable to disengaging from school. Currently, GJA serves more than 100 young men of color to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Position

We are currently seeking a World Languages Teacher (Spanish) for the 2024-2025 school year.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students
  • Develop Spanish language skills of students through activities and project-based learning and experience
  • Increase verbal and written fluency in Spanish
  • Meet the diverse learning needs of the students through differentiation
  • Foster a passion for language and cultural literacy in students
  • Participation in ongoing staff development that supports the curriculum and differentiated instruction, as well as the hands on problem based immersion language approach
  • Regularly confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic challenges
  • Participate in collaboration regularly as a part of a team
  • Documenting attendance, grades and maintaining other pertinent records according to school policies
  • Maintaining consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor s degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • 1-2 years experience in teaching Spanish in an educational institution
  • Proven ability to conduct classes entirely in the target language as appropriate
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to Instruct students individually and in groups, using teaching various teaching methods, as appropriate to meet the needs of the student
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a part of a teaching team
