Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.The Special Automotive Mechanic is responsible for skilled journeyman work on a large and complex variety of automotive and heavy duty equipment.The employees in this class perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, heavy duty trucks, tractors, graders, cranes, bulldozers, and other standard and special automotive equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Duties include welding, occasional fabrication of parts or other duties relating to the upkeep of equipment. Employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders. A supervisor may check work during repair or test-run equipment after work is completed. Employees may supervise semi-skilled or unskilled helpers. Essential Job Functions
- Does general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, graders, mowers, power shovels, and other mechanical equipment.
- Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies and cooling, fuel and exhaust systems.
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; and tunes motor using standard testing equipment.
- Takes down, repairs and reassembles air compressors, pumps and related equipment.
- Inspects, repairs and overhauls and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors, magnetos and starters.
- Repairs automobiles and truck bodies and does various related metal work by cutting, welding and other procedures.
- Uses mechanical hand and power driven tools and equipment such as grinders, fender hammers and sanders, drill presses, lathes, testing and welding equipment and other shop tools and equipment.
- Gives routine lubrication and other service to vehicles as required.
- Performs maintenance tasks on the municipal garage facilities and heating plant; and performs various painting and welding jobs.
- Performs related work as required.
Skills/Knowledges/Abilities
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy duty automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of mechanical repair of heavy trucks and construction equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches and pencil diagrams.
- Skill in the use and the operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
Training/Education/Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of work experience as an automotive and/or heavy-duty equipment mechanic; or
- Two (2) years of work experience as an Automotive Service Worker (class code 137); and
- Possession of one (1) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in either the A Automotive Test Series or T Medium/Heavy Truck Series; or
- Possession of an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certificate, i.e. Ford, GM, John Deere, Case, Freightliner, etc; and
- Possession of a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

This money is held and invested by the plan's trustees in options selected by the employee. Risk levels vary depending on the options chosen. Participation is voluntary.Retirement PlansThe Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) and the Police and Fire Disability and Pension Fund (PFDPF) are the two plans available to City employees. Both are established by Ohio law and participation is required. Both the employee and the City of Hamilton contribute a percentage (pre-tax) into the system. Members do not pay into the Federal Social Security System.
