Job SummaryHOPE SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE II RESOURCE - SPECIAL EDUCATION Revised 7/2017 CLASSIFIED SALARY SCHEDULE: RANGE 8 (AIDE II AND RESOURCE) Basic Function: Under the immediate supervision of a certificated teacher, principal, and special education coordinator, assists special education teachers, classroom teachers, and other certificated personnel in the supervision of pupils. Also assists in instructional tasks, which may be performed by a person, not licensed as a classroom teacher in categorical programs; performs related work as required. Not responsible for initial planning or instruction. Representative Duties: Instructional Aide II: Assists certificated teachers and related service providers in providing instruction to students with significant physical, learning, social-emotional, and/or medical and health related needs in preschool inclusion and/or K-6th grade educational settings. Assigned students typically receive 50% or more of the school day supported by special education services through Learning Center or Inclusion programs. This includes students with specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavioral challenges, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, orthopedic and other health impairment, and students with impaired vision, hearing, speech and/or other limiting conditions. Assigned tasks may include, but are not limited to, instruction in appropriate social interactions, self-help skills, pre-academic and academic skills, implementation of behavior intervention plans, data collection, working with students independently or in small groups, supervising students on playgrounds and on field trips, and assisting classroom teachers or other certificated staff. Assigned instructional tasks may include, but are not limited to, language arts, science, math, social studies and geography. Assists in teaching cursive writing and in developing language skills in students by correlating correct vocabulary and phonics; assists students in finding materials in the Learning Center; operates audio/visual and office equipment as required; supervises students on playgrounds and on field trips; performs incidental clerical and other work as required. Assists students with feeding, toileting, diapering, personal hygiene, dispense medication as appropriate, perform g-tube feeding and venting, suctioning, and implement seizure protocols and Individualized Health Care Plans.Instructional Aide II:Special Day Class or full inclusion special education aide assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students placed in special education programs because of specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavioral issues, severely and physically disabled, students with impaired vision, hearing, speech and/or other limiting conditions. Assigned instructional tasks may include, but are not limited to, language arts, science, math, social studies and geography. Assists in teaching cursive writing and in developing language skills in students by correlating correct vocabulary and phonics; assists students in finding materials in the Learning Resource Center; operates audio/visual and office equipment as required; supervises students on playgrounds and on field trips; performs incidental clerical and other work as required. May be required to assist students with feeding, toileting or diapering.Resource Aide is instrumental in interpreting and implementing the Individual Education Program (IEP) for each Resource child. The Resource Aide offers specialized instruction in math, reading, language arts, social studies and science by interpreting the teacher's lessons and instructions to enable the resource student to be successful at the tasks. The Resource Aide will implement behavior management goals when appropriate, choose appropriate materials (with teacher's direction) which are used to help the student learn, and offer remedial instruction working with children individually or in a small group in the classroom, or tutorially in the resource room. The Resource Aide must be able to communicate with the classroom teacher to receive instructions and to discuss the lesson plans and the performance of the students on the tasks. When appropriate, the Resource Aide attends parent conferences, Special Ed. Parent meetings, the monthly meeting of the Special Education team, and communicates with the parent on an informal basis.The Resource Aide is also responsible for the attendance of the Resource students, the timeliness of Resource reviews and notification of staff members for the IEP and CST meetings.The Resource Aide will perform the duties of a Special Education or SDC Aide when required and assist the Resource teacher, the Special Day Class teacher and the classroom teacher by performing clerical duties as required for planning, preparation and instruction of the planned lessons.On occasion, all special education aides may supervise students on the playground before school, at recess and on field trips.Knowledge of:English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and basic arithmetic.Ability to:Relate warmly to parents and students from various ethnic backgrounds. Assist students with special learning problems; assist with motivating and supervising the learning activities in a school setting; help develop each student's potential; read, write and speak at the level required for successful job performance; learn and apply school policies, methods, practices and terminology used in instruction; communicate with children effectively; use initiative in performing duties; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, teachers, other employees and the public. Attend special education and regular education workshops as required. Understand the needs of the student and balance those needs with the needs of the classroom teacher.Education and Experience:Associate of Arts degree or two years of college credit (48 units) required. Experience with and knowledge of learning disabilities.Working Conditions:Classroom and school playground environmentPhysical Demands:Seeing to monitor students during classroom activities; hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance to students; bending at the waist; walking and standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment or office equipment. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including pushing, lifting and transferring students in wheelchairs.Requirements / QualificationsREQUIREMENTS: Associate of Arts degree or two years of college credit (48 units).
