Overview
The Specialized Machinist works under the Team Leader, and with limited supervision, perform diversified and specialized machining operations specifying exacting tolerances and finish specifications. Employ 5S and Lean Manufacturing skills in every day work practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Set up machining sequences. Operate, edit and adjust a variety of machine tools and operations. Perform machining operations on a variety of computer numerical control (CNC) and manual machines. Edit and check programming of machines. Determine operational or tooling sequence. Select feeds, speeds and tooling. Hold close and exacting tolerances.
* Perform general shop work such as deburring, machine repair and maintenance duties. Areas of operational specialization include model making, hobbing and burnish set ups (to perform gear cutting). Set up and run tool cutter grinding. Produce models to engineering specification. Areas or machine specialization include l-16 screw machine, conventional screw machine, and hobbing machines.
* Use blueprints, schematics, written and verbal directions, shop policies and quality standards to obtain required contours, dimensions, and finish specifications. Calibrate and modify operational sequences to adjust speed of machining and frequency of cuts.
* Use safety standards as a guideline to perform machine maintenance and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
* Inspect own work using functional gages and inspection equipment in order to maintain maximum quality. Inspect production work as often as necessary in order to maintain maximum quality standards and to prevent scrap or minimal rework. Must be OAP (Operator Acceptance Program) certified to inspect own work using various hand tools and measuring instruments in order to maximize quality. Assist in training new employees. Report defective material and other unusual condition or circumstance to supervisor.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
* High School Diploma or equivalent.
* Use of elementary geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles together with the use of drawings, specifications, charts and tables. Ability to use various types of precision measuring tools and instruments. Familiarity with shop practices, inspection and safety.
* 3+ years of experience in areas of specialized machining
